Frank KROWICKI Obituary

KROWICKI, Frank Jan
November 11, 1935 - July 25, 2013
Frank Krowicki led a remarkable life; an epic story of survival and success, overcoming what would have crippled most people. Born in Poland in 1935, when Frank was four years old his father was forcibly removed by Russians from the family home, never to be seen again. He and his three (step) siblings, mother and visiting aunt were captured and sent to northern Russia. Frank and his brother were put in an orphanage where the treatment of children was unspeakably brutal -only 10 % of the children survived. His two sisters died in Siberia. Through a political exchange program, the remaining family was reunited and sent to Zambia to a refugee camp. Life in Africa, though difficult, was a paradise compared to his earlier hardships. In 1947, Frank, his brother John, and his mother came to Canada through a sponsorship from his Uncle Nick, a farmer in Saskatchewan. At the age of 15, fed up with farm life, Frank left home to find work in the west. Over the next decade, Frank worked at many jobs, ending up at Uranium City until 1959 which he later described as "self-imposed jail to make money at the prime of his life". In 1959, things were looking up for Frank. He started making trips back to Europe, and during this period, he and a friend had a business smuggling cigarettes and raincoats from Copenhagen to Poland. The profit margin was huge, and it was an adventurous, gypsy life on which Frank looked back upon with great fondness. In 1965, Frank met and fell in love with Krystyna. They were married in 1966. A year later, Frank, pregnant Krystyna, and a Volkswagon filled with Danish furniture arrived in Canada. In 1967 Frank opened his first restaurant, Bar X Steakhouse which evolved into Smuggler's Inn, and rapidly became an iconic Calgary restaurant and landmark. Frank had a business vision of good quality, affordable dining that became an instant success. As his business expanded, so did Frank's family, to include his beloved children, Miles, Pamela, and Tamara. Throughout this time, Frank's entrepreneurial spirit came to fruition; however, this bought its own personal challenges. In 1991, Frank and Krystyna were divorced, and Frank subsequently married Kathleen (Jaynne), with whom he had a son, Hokan, who he was very close to. Over the next two decades, Frank's business expanded to include three more, very successful restaurants, and Frank moved out to his Cochrane acreage. Here Frank built one of the most remarkable houses in the province. It was an eccentric wonder to behold. Part hoarder of cast iron oddities, part impeccable taste with an eye for design, Frank created a private art gallery/museum as his home. The surrounding land gave Frank the fresh air, the woods, the outdoors and independence that he so enjoyed. Once again, though, tragedy struck: in 2011 he lost his eldest son Miles to cancer. The following year, his house burned to the ground. As tough as Frank had proven himself to be, these hits, combined with chronic lung disease, were too hard for him. Frank Krowicki was loved and cared for when he passed away peacefully on Thursday July 25th. Frank was predeceased by his parents, brother John, and son Miles. Surviving relatives are daughters (Pam and Tamara), sons (Hokan and Jeff), grandchildren (Paris, Kasia, Mateo, Orlando, and Linden), nieces and nephews (Joseph, Mary, Stanley, Henry and Johnny), and numerous friends and relatives in both Canada and Poland. Frank's family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Melanie Bowen, Alex, Rob, Anne and the homecare nurses who supported Frank's wishes to stay at home, as well as Dr. Mia Grover. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME (17 Avenue South West and Lower Springbank Road) on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Flowers are gratefully declined. Arrangements entrusted to EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE 24223 Township Road 242, Calgary AB, (17th Avenue SW and Lower Springbank Rd).

We were away from home when your tried to contact us about Frank's passing. Thank you for that consideration. We regret we were unable to be there for you.
Many thoughts flood my memory as I recall meeting Frank on the advise of Aunt Mary and Aunt Anne in Winnipeg..."Go look him up at the Krowicki Steakhouse in Calgary!!" Frank received two teenagers from Winnipeg as long lost friends and over a few "Longhorns" and a few "Crown Royal" samples astonished us with the offer of the VW van to see the West! The die was cast. Since 1970 "Bar X" and then "Smugglers" became a destination (sometimes on weekends and by motorcycle) for steak! Frank always greeted us as friends.
Both Bonnie and I, and later our daughter Laura, were always made to feel like very special guests.
As children of survivors of Siberia we shared stories told by our respective families of hardships, often paused by that glazed far away look.
The world lost a Good One! Krysiu, Pamela and Tamara, Bonnie, Laura and I share your grief and will always remember fondly the Friends we've made in Calgary! God Bless you all.

I met Frank in Denmark when I was 19 years old, when I was dating his friend. He pointed out after a short time, that I was much too young to get married and leave my home, but as most young people I thought I knew it all.
I came to Canada in 1965 and after a couple of years Frank and his wife Krystyna arrived. Frank, Krystyna and their children became my family in Canada, a bond I am most grateful for. Through all the years and life's many ups and downs I knew I could always count on Frank for advise. He had a unique ability to see through me and somehow I always felt better both about life and myself after one of our chats.
I had the good fortune to be able to say good bye to him shortly before his passing and tell him thanks for all he had done for me over the years.
I feel like a part of my life is gone but he will always have my love and respect.
He gave me a bottle of Crown royal to take with me to my sister in Denmark, and we will have a toast to Frank on Wednesday.

I was the one who spend the least time with Frank as compared to the rest of my family. However from the few moments I spent with him I knew he was quiet, dependable and respectful person, with good heart and a sense of duty. Helpful and kind to his friends or new immigrants lost and desperate as we and others were one day so many years ago.

I will never forget the day Frank and Krystyna invited us to the small house in the country overviewing the mountains. I still keep this magic moment in my memory and the beautiful sunset that day. To me it was a paradise on earth. Frank will remain in my memeory as a man with vision, imagination, a super eye on beauty, eager to explore and create. I know that if he had a chance to study he would have been the best Canadian architect ever.
He was a very good man to many including my family. Therefore he will be kept in our memory with fondness and best regards as long as we all live. Our lives have changed in many ways than one and we often regreted (especially my mom) that contact with him was somehow lost over the years.

We will keep him in our prayers and in our good memories of him.

We are thinking of you during this difficult time.

My condolences to the Krowicki family. Frank hired me at the BarX Steakhouse in 1970. I was there when Smugglers was built and on until 1975. Because of him I was able to become a landed immigrant of Canada. Frank is the most admired and respected person that I have ever met. I wish I could have seen him one more time.

Frank ... I will always and forever remember and cherish our times together.
Our walks and our talks, hours would fly by, never enough time for wisdom, laughter and all that is real.

An honor and a blessing to have been your friend, you have taught me more than you could possibly imagine.
Most significant, to live life to the fullest, live authentically, and that it's a lot more fun coloring outside the lines!

Thank you my dear spirit friend for being you, you have etched that of who you are into the lives of so many, profoundly and beneficially so.

Be well as you journey onwards to greater creativity, love and laughter.
Miss you dearly.

Condolences to the Krowicki Family.
May your hearts graciously heal over time.

It takes nothing to join the crowd.
It takes everything to stand alone.

Frank ... teach the angels about living authentically, true to self, they will learn immensely from you ...

This was a poem Frank we both liked when we met, remember? It was a long time ago but here it is, one more time;

Precz z moich oczu!... poslucham od razu,
Precz z mego serca!... i serce poslucha,
Precz z mej pamieci!... nie tego rozkazu
Moja i twoja pamiec nie poslucha.

You were my husband, the love of my life and the father of our children.
...i zawsze bede kochac, i zawsze bede tesknic
I hope Frank you are finally at peace, happy and reunited with Miles.

To Krystyna, Pamela, Tamara and the entire Krowicki family,

Our hearts are broken over the sad news of Frank. We send you our condolences at this difficult time. Frank was a great friend and employer to my father, Garry Pon. My father always had great respect and admiration for Frank. We will remember with great fondness all the times we went to visit Frank, Krystyna and their children on their acreage to ride horses. Though we haven't seen him for a while, it was a honor to have known such a giving and generous man like Frank. He will be missed. May Frank find my father up above and have a great reunion of old friends :)

I don't think I knew it at the time, but Frank was a mentor of mine, allowing me to work for him for 17 years. One of the best things I learned from him was how to be resourceful, but also how to have fun at work and build relationships with people. Wherever my career took me, I kept in touch with Frank and with friends I worked with at Smugglers.
I look forward to reconnecting with some of you tomorrow.

Frank was absolutely one of a kind! I shall forever smile as I remember him. Whether it was out at the acreage or in the back rooms of Smugglers, Frank had a presence. An epic life lived with an independent spirit. Though I was a friend of Miles it seemed that I was automatically a friend of Frank's. Thank you Frank. Condolences to family and the many friends who feel his loss.

Hi, Frank, I'm sitting in the basement of Smugglers' tying your photo to miniature bottles of crown royal for your funeral. I just went upstairs and poured a coffee and the place is packed as always. It just all feels so terribly sad and I don't think you realized how badly you'd be missed. A little too humble perhaps. I will never forget our crazy, adventurous times together.

Frank was a wonderful, adventurous friend. He gave me the biggest gift in life which was to know him and share some of that adventurous spirit with me. Always on the lookout for creativity Frank had one last request for me, just a couple of months ago; "Deb can I ask you one last request?" I held my breath.. "Can you find me some iron lids(tops)from old seeder(drills)that were used in the early 1900's-1960's to spread seeds for crops." Now this may seem like a strange request but knowing Frank and his daughter Tamara they were up to something wacky and wonderful! I have since found 6 lids to add to Tamara's few but continue to look for more in order for her to complete her artistic task for her dad.
Friends we sure are lucky to have known him. I hope others will share their adventure stories with Frank on this guest book, so we can pass on his legacy.
I was blessed to know Frank and will miss our chats.
Please accept my deepest condolences for your family's loss.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

May there piece and God's Blessings to Frank's Family, who experienced a great loss in Franks Passing.

It was a short few years I have known Frank. I had great respect and admiration for Frank . Yes he was my boss but it was more than that, he was a Friend. I felt like he was an extension of my family. We had some long talks, business and of personal nature that I have enjoyed very much. We certainly had some laughs. It is difficult for me to accept that you are gone, I feel your presence everywhere. You were a man of vision, strength, business savvy with a bulldog tenacity, and always ready for challenge, definitely a problem solver.
Frank you will be missed, it is my hope that you will be a guide in my life. May God Bless you.
