Frieda Holtan Obituary

FRIEDA IRENE BERYL SMITH HOLTAN July 30th 1918 to June 11th, 2007 Frieda was born in Adanac, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada to Mary Cecil Millichamp Smith and Frederick Howard Smith. The Smith family moved to Lake Elsinore in 1924. In 1935 the family purchased Elsinore Pioneer Lumber Company, which the Smith Family still owns and operates today. Frieda was the first of 4 generations to attend Elsinore schools. After graduating from Elsinore High School, she married Gordon Winston Holtan, Tech Sgt. in the Army/Air Force, and had two children, Winston Herbert Holtan and Sonya Kathleen Holtan Matthies. Gordon Winston was killed as the result of an Army Aircraft accident on 09/20/46. Frieda was active in the Business and Professional Women's Organization, was a Sunday School teacher for the 1st Presbyterian Church of Lake Elsinore and played the piano for Sunday services. Frieda was the oldest, continuous member of this church, having belonged since 1924. She was a member and secretary of the VFW Auxiliary. She felt very strongly about the VFW and all that is represented and remained a member until her passing. Frieda is survived by her daughter, Sonya, her son-in-law, Frank H. Matthies, three granddaughters, Heidi Matthies Dodd, Ericka Matthies and Heather Matthies Yarbro and her four great-grandchildren: Jacob Matthies Dodd, Jackson June Dodd, Alexa Kathleen Yarbro and Clay Michael Yarbro. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to Visiting Nurse Association of the Inland Counties, 39815 Alta Murrieta Drive, Ste. C4, Murrieta, CA 92563. Memo: Frieda Holtan/Hospice.
