Harold Horton Oberg

Harold Horton Oberg, 91, longtime resident of Salinas, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012. He was born on October 24, 1920, in Madrone, near Morgan Hill.

Graduating from Live Oak High School class of 1938, Harold then attended Hartnell College, majoring in Aviation and Engineering. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, he enlisted and was sent to Cal Aero in Chino, then to advanced training at Luke Field Arizona. Commissioned First Lieutenant, he ferried airplanes around the world with the Air Transport Command. Post war, he returned to Salinas and managed the Salinas Valley Airport and developed flying schools in King City and Paso Robles as well. In addition to teaching flight, he flew Airlines, and for many years had a crop dusting business servicing the Salinas Valley. Harold retained his status in the Air Force as a Liaison Officer to the Air Force Academy, retiring after 40 years service as Lieutenant Colonel.

The adventure then began as Harold and his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Jane, traveled the world "Space A". Active in many local organizations his one constant love was aviation.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; son, Bob Oberg and will be forever missed by his daughter, Kristine Hernandez; grandchildren, Anne Nunez, Vickie Hernandez, Christopher Hernandez, Amelia Hernandez; great-granddaughters, Nicole and Natalie Nunez, Justine Osuna; great-great-granddaughter, Callie Jayne Costa and sister, Elena Oberg Moreno.

An afternoon to reminisce, open house will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the Salinas Airport Terminal-The Landing Zone.

Kristine and family,
We will miss Harold, a fun member of the family; and a walking history of Morgan Hill/Salinas Valley. He remembered everything!

Harold Oberg and his lovely wife Mary Jane were great friends of my parents, Bill and Margaret Smith. Dad was one of his flight instructors back in the late 1930's and early 1940's, and I knew him when I was a youngster and later when I was attending the NPS in Monterey. Harold was a very fine and enjoyable man, one of the last of the true old-timers. He will be missed.

Harold was always friendly, full of energy and sharp of mind and wit. He always made me feel welcome and was not afraid to ask for help around the Uvas. I will miss Harold and Mary Jane and Bob. Our hearts go out to Kristine and the rest of the family.
