Roy Guy "Dick" Camp was born September 2, 1921 in the town of Carbon in Eastland County, Texas. He grew up and went to school in north Texas, and spent his life serving people and churches in North Central Texas, Harris, Brazoria, and Galveston Counties. Dick went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerne Camp; parents, Roy and Alva Camp; sisters, Elaine Delashaw and Enise Behrman; and his brother, Lofton Camp.
Dick is survived by his brother, Joe Camp and his wife Catherine of Vancouver, Washington, by his sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Martha Mannahan Camp of Pearland, Texas, Doug and Paula Weston Camp of Spring, Texas; by his four granddaughters and their spouses, Rachel and David Thibodeaux, Rebecca and Bryan Masters, Laura and Jarod DeGeorge, and Traci and Tim Uno; and by his 14 great-grandchildren, 6 great-grandsons & 8 great-granddaughters, and was lovingly known as Papa.
Dick graduated from Texas Wesleyan University and would then go on to graduate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. While in school, he was the pastor of churches in Rochell and Camp San Saba, both near Brady, TX. During his seminary days he was pastor of Retta Baptist Church near Burleson. Dick was the first pastor of Westview Baptist Church in Spring Branch that began as a mission of West End Baptist Church. After serving at Westview, he was called as pastor of First Baptist Church of Alvin and was there till he retired from active pastoring and became the Director of Missions of Galveston Baptist Association. In retirement, Dick served as Chaplain and Worship leader at The Terrace and at Trinity Oaks. At all these churches, Dad made lasting friendships that he cherished and kept throughout his life.
Dick loved the Lord above all else, but his wife of 69 years LaVerne was a close second. They were married on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Dick's love for his wife and family was a model of devotion and duty, based on a vow that he faithfully kept until death parted them. He recognized and acknowledged the providence of God in his life, leading others where God directed, passing on his Christian heritage to the next generations, and he never stopped serving the Lord. He will be greatly missed, but we will see him again one day.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to the LaVerne and R.G. "Dick" Camp Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 4105 Broadway, Houston, TX 77087.
