Ulysses Lowery Obituary
Mr. Ulysses Winfred Lowery was the only son of the late Mr. Moses and Mrs. Hattie Perry Lowery. He had one brother, Mack Lowery of Florence. He was born and reared in Florence, South Carolina, in the East Florence community, where he gained many lifelong friends.
At an early age, U.W., as he was affectionately called by family and friends, accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He joined Trinity Baptist Church, where he served in several ministries. Later in life, he enjoyed working with Trinity's Men's Club, where he cooked during the annual Father's Day breakfast.
He was educated in the public schools of Florence, South Carolina. He graduated from the historic Wilson High School in 1965. After graduation, he attended Benedict College. While at Wilson, he met the love of his life, Charlene Goodman. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, and entertaining. To this blessed union were born two children: Dr. Leonard R. Lowery and April C. Lowery (Travis) Bruce.
U.W. spent his professional career working for the railroad-beginning with Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Coast Line. He retired from CSX as a foreman after 40 years of dedicated service. He took tremendous pride in his work with CSX and was a member of the Seaboard Fellowship Club (railroad club) and Crescent Temple #148.
His children and grandchildren were the absolute joy of his life. His son, Dr. Leonard R. Lowery, filled him with pride, carrying on the Lowery name with two beautiful daughters, Maya Camille and Carmen Ivana. His daughter, April Lowery (Travis) Bruce, was the apple of his eye and the epitome of "daddy's little girl." She brought him great happiness and blessed him with a grandson, Emory Jordan Lowery Bruce. He also cherished the love of his surrogate grandchildren: Eli Bruce, Rylee, and Russell McElveen.
U.W. will also be remembered with love by his sisters-in-law: Shirley (John) Hudson, Phyllis Royals, and Del McBride; his brother-in-law, Charlie (Charlene) Goodman; and his daughter-in-love, Debra Anderson Lowery. Beyond these, he was deeply loved by many extended family members and lifelong friends, all of whom will continue to cherish his memory.
Our family also wishes to express our profound appreciation to the many physicians, nurses, and caregivers who attended to U.W. at MUSC, McLeod Hospice House, and Presbyterian Rehab Facility. Their skill, professionalism, and compassion provided great comfort and dignity in his final days. Their tireless efforts will always be remembered with gratitude also, to eveyone else who did all they could for our family. Thank You!
