Charles Woodbury Obituary

Charles P. (Tod)

Woodbury, III

1954-2017

Charles P. (Tod) Woodbury, III, 62, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Tod was born in Pensacola in 1954 and named for his Grandfather and his Father. Tod's parents were both WWII Marines and Tod took tremendous pride in Pensacola and its U.S. Navy and Marine Corps heritage.

Like his Mother, Tod excelled at all things scholastic. He graduated from Escambia High, Wake Forest University (1976) and received his law degree from Florida State University. He was extremely proud of all three, avidly following and cheering on their debate and sports teams throughout his life.

Tod's love of debate and participation at Escambia High led him to many exciting and fulfilling years, as part of the truly remarkable and highly successful Debate Team at Wake Forest, where he was one of the top debaters in our country. He was fortunate to have had outstanding coaching at Escambia High and Wake Forest, extremely talented debate teammates and partners, and he established lifelong friendships with them--many of whom today have generously rushed forward with stories of Tod and their glory days at Wake and honored him with tributes. He had coached two teams by phone even during his law school days. Some considered him a debate "legend".

Tod served on various boards over the years and for decades as Chairman of the Board of Bank of the South. His counsel was considered invaluable.

Tod's family, friends, his hometown and his country were all important to him. A man of few words, a dry quick wit, he made you think, to ponder life and to be in his arc was always a gift. Children were drawn to him as well. His brilliant mind remembered every book and movie he had ever seen, so he could light up their eyes and inspire their imagination with fun, games and stories.

At age 17, Tod wrote "My Responsibility To Freedom", and received awards and accolades from various civic and military groups and leaders. It is a timeless, thought-provoking call to action that resonates with patriots and heroes even today.

He taught us much. He never sought the limelight. He touched many lives and hearts without being judgmental.

May God hold him close...

Tod was predeceased by his parents, Eleanor G. Woodbury and Charles P. Woodbury.

He is survived by his siblings, Barbara Woodbury of San Diego, Ca., Nancy Royals of Phoenix, AZ., Marilyn Hess (Don) of Pensacola and William (Bill) Woodbury (Jan) of Pensacola; nephew, Benjamin (Ben) Barksdale (Meghan) of Memphis; nieces, Leigh Taylor of New York, Paige Davis (Matt) of Pensacola, Maggie Woodbury of Pensacola and Kendall Woodbury of Pensacola; grandnieces, Ellie Barksdale and Charlie Davis and grandnephew, Thomas Barksdale.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Bayview Memorial Park with Fr. Michael Hoffman officiating.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Scott Mitchell, Cliff Mitchell, Don Hess, David Gunn, Dr. Jim Stringfield, Terry Powers, Alan Rosenbloum, Charles Royals and Joe Durant.

The Family wishes to thank the Wilmer Mitchell Family; the caring people of TLC, especially his friend Pat Robertson; the Officers, Employees and Boards of Bank of the South and The Warrington Bank; the Wake Forest and NDT Debate Groups and the kind staff of Harper Morris Memorial Chapel.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to:

The movie A Beautiful Mind comes to mind...A sweet, kind and generous man. I'll never forget the night we teamed up to play pool against some folks and well...my rent got paid! LOL!
I read books and or write sermons in bars or public places and Tod is who planted that seed.

Tod was a dear friend and groomsman at our wedding. He was also one of the sweetest people we've ever met. If we weren't across the Atlantic, we'd have come to his beloved Pensacola for a fond farewell. We're so glad eulogies and cherished moments are being shared on his Facebook page, they're bringing back fond memories. We'll be drinking a coke and milk with dinner tonight.

Tod was, for a time, my debate partner at Wake Forest back in 1977. He was generous, committed without qualification to the team, and a great friend.

Sat and talked with Tod many times and was always amazed at his endless knowledge and dry sense of humor. One of the most interesting persons I have ever met. Rest in peace.

I 'met' Tod through a mutual friend on Facebook and we immediately became friends. We shared so many views and both loved to poke the bear just to see the reaction! He was a remarkable man and I am so sorry I never got to meet him in person....but had that planned for next year. When i saw the post of him passing, all I could think of was, "I didn't have a chance to say good bye!" I am going to miss him terribly and life will be a little less without him. He had many more friends he had known longer and I want to give them my condolences as well.

Tod and I were roommates in college during our junior and senior years. We were also teammates on the Wake Forrest debate team from our freshman through our junior years. Todd was a kind and generous person with a sharp wit. His passion for collegiate debate was something that continued throughout his life. He was definitely a character with strong opinions who's passing is mourned by many. He loved the Pensacola area and often marveled and wondered at the maneuvers of the blue Angels overhead. Wish they could dip their wings in honor of Todd and his legacy.

Have thought of Tod through the years. Always remember club, ect., but mostly Turner Lee Day elementary. Crossing guards, kick ball & Red Rover Red Rover we dare you come over. Somebody broke through me & Tod and be damned broke Tod's wrist. RIP
