Richard Saal Obituary

Richard Andrew Saal

Dr. Richard Andrew Saal of Pensacola, 82, died January 28, 2015, after bravely fighting a rare,

aggressive cancer linked to his military service as an Atomic Veteran. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Carolyn, three daughters: Kathleen Saal, Mary Beth Bradley (Tom), and Ellen Saal; two grandsons, James and Andrew Bradley; and many cherished friends. Born in Baltimore, Md.,

Richard graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, most notably, in the Pacific Proving Grounds in 1958. Richard began his dental practice in Fort Lauderdale, living there more than 30 years. He loved light tackle sport fishing

and was a member of the Sportfishermen of Broward (SOBs) for more than 20 years, competing on his prized boat "Jaws." On his retirement, Richard traded his boat for an RV and traveled the U.S. and Canada with Carolyn. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Thomas Fitzgerald, M.D. and Leo Villegas, M.D. for their extraordinary care. Special thanks, too, to the doctors'

staffs and nurses who touched Richard's life, especially in chemo and radiation at Woodlands. To Covenant Hospice, you are amazing, especially his "angel," Angela.

Services: Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, followed by interment at Barrancas National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations in Richard's name to: Covenant Hospice (5041 N. 12th Avenue, Pensacola, FL 32504), or Fisher House Foundation (111 Rockville Pike, Suite 420, Rockville, MD 20850; 888-394-8560, fisherhouse.org).
