Tommy Snowden Obituary

UntitledTOMMY SNOWDEN
1941 - 2007

Tommy Snowden, age 65, passed at the University of Alabama Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama on Friday, August 31, 2007 following a long illness.
He was born on December 6, 1941 in Pensacola, Florida, to the late Stuart Snowden and Annie Mitchell Russell. He attended local Escambia County schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington Senior High School in 1960. With a desire for higher education, Tommy attended Tennessee State University for one year, Booker T. Washington Junior College and completed his Bachelor and Master's Degrees at Florida A&M University, Tallahassee, Florida. In 1978 he was united in marriage to Grace Floyd and from this union were born Tolanda and Thomas Snowden. For over 28 years Tommy was a dedicated and committed teacher with the Escambia County School System.
Baptized as a child in St. John Divine Missionary Baptist Church, he lived his life as a faithful member. Tommy served as a member in the church's Trustee Committee, Pastor Aids, Senior Choir, and various other church activities. Affiliated with many organizations, those closest to him were Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity (Life Member) and Deep Water City Lodge #751 of Elks. Tommy was instrumental in the purchasing of the Kappa House in Pensacola, the annual Wine Sip, Black and White Ball, and other activities held by the local Kappa organization.
Tommy was known and loved by many people. He was always the life of the party, loved to dance and he never met strangers. He possessed a love and passion for hunting, fishing and creative story telling. Even when Tommy was ill, he never let it keep him down or get the best of him. He was a fighter and memories of his love for his family and friends will be cherished.
Tommy is survived by his devoted wife Grace Snowden; two sons, Tommy Snowden Jr., and Thomas Snowden; and a daughter Tolanda Snowden, of Pensacola; four grandchildren; sister deceased, Roberta Gray; brothers, Joe (Barbara) Russell, Sammy (Cynthia) Russell, Calvin (Janie) Russell, and Gregory Russell, of Miami Florida; sister, Rosalind (Robert) Collier of Orlando, Florida; and brother, Anthony Russell of Memphis, TN; aunt, Mary L. Tate of Milwaukee, WI; brothers-in-law, William (Buster) Floyd, and Anthony Floyd of Pensacola, FL, and James (Maliwan) Floyd of Sacramento, CA; sisters-in-law, Sharon Cromer, Dorothy Floyd, Mary Floyd of Pensacola, FL, Shirley (Hardie) White of Naperville, IL and Carolyn (Kevin) Floyd-Johnson of Honolulu, HI; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service for Tommy Snowden will be 12:00 p.m. Friday September 7, 2007 at St. John Divine Missionary Baptist Church, 620 E. Jordan St., Pensacola, FL. The Reverend Richard L. Hines Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pensacola, FL.

If you still forward messages to family.
I was a 5th grade student of Mr. Snowden. What an experience with a class I can never forget. We had so much diversity in our class and he held us together. Loved his white Grand Prix.
I made him a clay impression and he got a kick out of it but never rid me until I visited him in 1981(17 yrs young)at school. He remembered me and reminisced of the past. Very instrumental in my upbringing as a white boy in segregated south that was so full of ......

Mrs. Snowden,
Tommy will be missed by many. He was an outstanding Grand parent while your grand daughter was in my class at Edgewater Head Start. He gave a very motivating speech to our young parents at one of the Parent meeting.

“Because I could not stop for death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves and immortality.”

Farewell Uncle Tommy, fellow partner in telling it like it t-i-is; you shall be sorely missed.

And to Aunt Grace, Tolanda & Thomas, don't despair too greatly, for death is simply our transitioning into another phase of life. Uncle Tommy has just gone ahead to a place where we all will have to travel one day.

Peace.

To the family of Tommy Snowden,
Mr. Snowden was my daughter's fifth grade teacher at Ferry Pass Elementary in 1983-84. I was the room mother. During that year our family became close with Mr. Snowden. He and my husband went fishing a few times ... the last time the boat almost sank. :) When my husband, Ray, died in 2000 Mr. Snowden showed up at the visitation. What a nice surprise is was to see him after all those years. We have nothing but fond memories of Mr. Snowden and our prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
Most Sincerely,
Doreen, Becky and Tommy Hildebrand

Mrs. Snowden and Family
I wanted to express my sympathy for your loss. Mr. Snowden was my 5th grade teacher. I am a teacher and was a science rep. where we attended many meetings together. One of my favorite memories was during a workshop we took at PJC. At the end of the workshop Mr. Snowden fried fish for a picnic we had on the last day. We all enjoyed that afternoon. I will always remember his smile and the laughter he brought.

Grace,
State and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Tommy's passing yesterday-too late to attend services. We will always remember him and the smiles, laughter, and good times we shared whenever we saw or talked with you and Tommy. Of course, we will never forget his love of people and cooking for the enjoyment of others. Even after we moved to Charlotte, we counted you and Tommy among special friends in Pensacola. Although his passing leaves a void in so many lives, take comfort in knowing that NOTHING can separate us from the love of God. God Bless you and your children and grandchildren. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

To Grace, Tolanda and Thomas: You will never realize how sorry I am for not keeping up with you all through the years. Though I have not been around, I have always carried ( and continue to carry) positive and warm memories of you and Tommy. Tommy to me was a champion in many significant ways. He was a warm, caring man whose laughter I still hear and whose presence I will miss. I was truly hoping to see him again. I missed talking to him. Tommy is gone but most definitely not forgotten.
