Wayne Barr Obituary

WAYNE RUSSELL BARR
1934 - 2010

Wayne Russell Barr, beloved husband of 55 years, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 75 on April 10, 2010. Wayne was born in Washington, D.C. on December 2, 1934 to Gayle and Patricia Barr. He married Joyce Livesay, also of Washington, D.C. in September of 1954.
Wayne served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958. He was honorably discharged in 1958, but re-entered the Navy in 1961 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At that time he was on active duty aboard the U.S.S. Tweedy, where he served as an ETN2 (Electronics Technician Second Class). Upon leaving the Navy, Wayne continued his career with Southern Bell as a valued employee until his retirement in October, 1999.
Wayne's love of the water came after years of playing in the Chesapeake Bay as a child. He was always an avid boater, something he shared with family and friends. The water was a way of life for his family, who enjoyed water skiing, camping, and moonlight boat rides. He also used his love of the water to help others. For 15 years he served in the Escambia County Search and Rescue; two of those years as Commander.
Wayne also served the Pensacola area during various events, including Emergency Operations during hurricanes, as a HAM radio operator. He was a member of Five Flags Amateur Radio Club and in the past was actively involved in teaching young people the art of HAM radio communications.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Linda Fleming, husband, Aden, of Milton, FL; Brian Barr and wife, Nancy, of Pensacola, and Jean Gillis and husband, Bob, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren include Eric Fleming, Emma Fleming, Abbey Barr, Anne Gillis, Susan Gillis, and Sherry Gillis Schwarzkopf; and great-grandchildren, Miranda and Gavin Fleming.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends. We commend him to the arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ, trusting in his mercy and salvation.
A memorial service will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 10am.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Emerald Coast Hospice, Pensacola, FL.
Please express your condolences online at www.oaklawnfunerals.com.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

I was so very sorry to hear of Wayne's passing this week. As a fellow amateur radio operator, Wayne and I would cross paths from time to time. He was very well thought of in the amateur radio community and will certainly be missed. My best wishes and prayers go out to the Barr family in this time of need.
