Yancy Spencer Obituary

Yancy Bailey

Spencer, III

July 2, 1950 -

February 14, 2011

Yancy Bailey Spencer, III, loving and very cherished son, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and faithful Christian, died suddenly from a heart attack while surfing in Malibu, California on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2011.

He was born in Roanoke, Virginia July 2, 1950, raised in Pensacola, Florida and resided in Gulf Breeze, Florida for over thirty years. At the age of 12 he came to Christ and was baptized. Though it was a childhood experience, God in His faithfulness brought him to a powerful conversion at the age of 21 when through his conversion, persistence, and gentleness of heart many were influenced to become Christians including his family, one of whom became a pastor.

There were two things that defined Yancy. The first being a deep devotion and daily walk with God, a prayer list that spans almost 40 years, and a concern for those less fortunate. Within that sphere he was a devoted son to proud mother, Pat Schluter, and wonderful husband to his beloved wife of 32 years, Lydia Ann Brown Spencer. He was proud father to Yancy Bailey Spencer, IV (surfer), Abigail Leigh (Spencer) Pruett (actress), Sterling Brown Spencer (professional surfer), and grandfather (Duke) to his wonderful grandchildren, Britney Noelle Sosebee and precocious Roman Allen Pruett, whom he traveled to see when he died, and dear father-in-law to Andrew Allen Pruett. The second is his great passion and love for the sport and art of surfing and within that his good business sense bloomed into Innerlight Surf Shop, so named in honor of Jesus ? He is the Innerlight.

Yancy began surfing at the age of 15 and by the time he was 21 had become a champion surfer. Because of his many accomplishments he put the Gulf Coast on the world map of surfing. Among his achievements were: 1st in East Coast Pro Division - 1973, 2nd in the US Surfing Chanpionships - 1975, Senior Men's U.S. Shortboard Champion - 1986, Senior Men's U.S. Longboard Surfing Champion - 1995. He was inducted into the East Coast Surf Legends Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

He is survived by a large family. Of his dear brothers and wives, business partner and best friend J.B. Schluter (Midgie), Pastor John Spencer (Lynn), Debra Posey and Jane Smith (Pat); brothers through family marriage, Ernie Schluter Jr. (Susan) and Bobbie Schluter (Toni). He was preceded in death by Ernest Schluter Sr. and Marie Schluter.

The visitation will be at Calvary Chapel Gulf Breeze, Saturday, February 19th at 9am to 10:30am followed by the funeral service. For condolences or information www.roselawn-fh.com and www.innerlightsurf.com.

Dear Lydia & Family,
What a blessing it was to enjoy Christian fellowship with Yancy and the Spencer family during the late 1980s. I was saddened to hear the news, but thankful to have crossed paths with such quality person of influence for good. May God hold all of you in the palm of His hand, and give you peace.
Your brother in Christ,

I met Yancy in the early seventies when I started attending Brownsville Assembly. I started playing drums for the Brownsville Choir under the direction of Myric McNabb. Don Cox was the pastor. Yancy was very encouraging and always committed of how he enjoyed the music. He was an inspiration to me. I later played with Dove Award winners, The Galileans, of Dallas. He impacted my life. He will be missed.

Mary, I do remember the name. Yancy and Debra lived in EPH the same time my family did. I was in the second and third grade. We use to play like we had a fort in the words near our houses. I am on Facebook, look me up...

News travels slow to Ohio but when I learned of his passing I was, of course, very saddened. But I'm so happy that I was able to have met him and to have some understaning of what a man he was. I was introduced to him by my friend Teddy who always said Yancy was his hero. Perhaps Teddy, who tought me how to surf and whom I was able to meet Yancy thru on the weird chance that Yancy was in San Diego when I was visiting Teddy, Yancy and I will be able to surf together. The last time I talked to Yancy was Feb.'09, I was down from Ohio visiting my Aunt and Uncle in Pensacola, when I was on Santa Rosa Island and spotted him getting out of his van, ready to go surfing. I stood on the beach with my cell phone in hand talking to my friend in San Diego and asking him, "Guess who I'm watching surf right now?" Not a bad last memory of a great man. May God bless all of Yancys' family and all of those who were fortunate enough to meet him.

Yancy was on our surf team in juno beach, florida. that was in 1969 I believe. we were shocked at his natural talent for surfing. I have been in pensacola a dozen times working in the last two years & wanted to look him up after all these years but didn't. I will always regret that. God has himself another winner now, at all of our expense. God Speed to you old friend.

The Yancy Dance

The wave would beckon him, tease him to ride it.

Yancy would tell this wave..."I will master you"

The wave told Yancy, "Go ahead and give it a try".

Yancy did.

And the wave and Yancy lived happily in the water of peace and love forever.

I have so many sweet memories of Yancy and JB when we had the Sentinel Newspaper...Making photos for an ad of Abby when she was just a toddler..and little Yancy surfing when he was in middle school...YancyIII is a Gulf Breeze legend..Starting his business at a very young age, using his gift of surfing to become famous, and sharing his faith has inspired so many people around the world...we have always been so proud of him...I moved to gulf breeze in 1968 and literally watched Innerlight become the great and popular institution it is today..It was always my children favorite shop and now my granddaughters.Abby's note in facebook [also in the pnj] was such beautiful gift to everyone that knew Yancy..He lived is life to showcase God's love..I think God is saying "I have found YANCY a man after my own heart".... with prayers and love,

I have the sweetest memories of Yancy and JP when we had the Sentinel newspaper..Gulf Breeze has lost a wonderful legend...My heart goes out to his sweet dear and beautiful family...I remember making pictures of Abby for the paper when she was just a toddler and little Yancy surfing when he was in middle school.. Yancy III was an inspiration to all who knew him...We are so proud of him. Abby's beautiful letter was a special gift for us all.It has been a joy watching Innerlight become such a great institution ... It was always the "favorite store" for my children and now for my granddaughter...We moved to Gulf Breeze in 1967..so we literally have followed his success... Yancy lived his life showcasing God's love... I feel God is saying "I have found Yancy a man after my own heart;"

To the family of Yancy Spencer. I knew him back in the 70's from Brownville Assembly of God. Although I haven't seen him in over 30 years, he was the person you meet and never forget. His life truly shined for the Lord and now he is in the presence of God. Yancy lived for Christ and was a testimony to so many. May you find comfort in knowing he is at peace with our Lord. May God give you all comfort during this very difficult time. You are in my prayers.

Yancy was one of the finest people I ever had the privilege of knowing. My younger brother, Jamey, skated on the Innerlight Team back in the 70's, my older brother Chris and JB have been friends forever and my niece, Maya taught surf camp for five seasons and worked in the store. Though I had not seen Yancy in many years, I believe his legacy to the rest of us is almost palpable. He walked his talk. What I will remember most is his kindness. May God Bless and Comfort you all. You are all in my prayers,

My prayers and condolences to the Spencer family. We were neighbors of Yancy and Debra back in the late 50's in East Pensacola Heights, and went to school together at A.K. Suter, A.V. Clubbs and PHS. Yancy always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He was a very positive influence in so many lives, be it as a close relationship of from afar. May God wrap His loving arms around the entire Spencer family and carry you through this hour of grief. In Christ's Love...

Lydia I was so shocked to hear about Yancey's passing. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. It has been many years since I had last seen you or Yancey but I have thought of you both many times. You inspired me so much as a child. I wish I had continued to play the violin too. Know that you are loved and that you mean so much to me. Our Lord is a very present help in time of need. May God bless you and show His love to in this time of sorrow.

February 18, 2011

Lydia, I was so saddened to hear of Yancy's death. I have such fond memories of Yancy from church and he will be missed. I have thought of him (and you) many times over the years, wondering what direction life took you and Yancy. I know that Yancy's legacy will live on for many years to come.

February 18, 2011

I knew Yancy when he was still a very young child. We lived on Creighton Road, Pensacola and Yancy's family lived in Scenic Heights just around the corner. He was handsome, always smiling, alive and full of happiness - he lived his entire life this way. He was a gift to us here on earth and now watches over all his loving family as an angel in Heaven. May you rest in peace, Yancy and may your memory be eternal. Rosemary K. Hendrix - Mother of Dino Panos, your classmate.

I never had the priviledge of knowing Yancy but my surfer son did. He is away at college right now and I'm sure the next time he surfs will be in Yancy's memory. I remember my son Ryan reading Yancy's testimony on Innerlight's website aloud to me. I am grateful he had such a great Christian role model as Yancy. I recently was reminded of a hymn that is fitting to Yancy's life. I don't know if he knew this hymn but I think he'd love it. O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus by Samuel Trevor Francis is a great hymn for surfers.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Vast unmeasured boundless free; rolling as a mighty ocean in its fullness over me. Underneath me, all around me, is the current of thy love, leading onward, leading homeward,to thy glorious rest above.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus!Spread his praise from shore to shore;how he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never,never-more;how he watches o'er his loved ones, died to call them all his own; how for them he intercedeth, watcheth o'er them from the throne.
O the deep, deep love of Jesus!Love of every love the best;tis an ocean vast of blessing, tis a haven sweet of rest;O the deep, deep love of Jesus! Tis a heav'n of heavn's to me;and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee.
God bless you all.

May God comfort each of the family members in the loss of Yancey! His faith in Jesus Christ has ushered him into eternity with His Lord. May we all be reminded of Yancey when we see the surf store name "Interlight" and what it meant for him.

I can't remember meeting Yancy but probably did as I was competing in ESA in the early 70's in Florida. However, Yancy had an impact on my life when after my parents divorced in 10th grade I was searching for meaning in life. Yancey always had the fish in his ads in Surfer magazine and his witness for Christ was something he was never ashamed of. 10 years later in 1981 I gave my life to Christ and in part thanks to Yancy and people like him.
Enjoy Glory brother we will see you again, but not yet...not yet.

Yancy Spencer 111 was indeed one of a kind. Unique, special and created in God's image. He will be truly missed by so many who had the pleasure of knowing Spencer and mentored by Spencer.
I had the pleasure of doing motivational speaking at a church youth group in Cottage Hill back in 2000 speaking on the importance of "choosing friends wisely." Yancy Spencer was also there that night to share his testimony of his life experiences. What an awsome testimony. Spencer and I became friends after that and he was always very supportive of my youth organization, Youth Awareness, Inc. in Pensacola.
I pray that God will poor out his spirit of Comfort and Peace to the Spencer Family during this time of sorrow. God bless.

I consider myself blessed to have known Yancy's family. I sang with Lydia and watched as Yancy, Abby and Sterling grew into adulthood at FBCP. Yancy always had a quite peace about him and a smile on his face. I grew up in Gulf Breeze so his face was often around. He was always a breath of fresh air and was available to help when needed. One thing I know he passes on to his family is strong faith, lean on that faith now.

To the Spencer family,
Yancy was a true disciple of Christ. We remember the "surfers" coming to Brownsville Assembly when we were Ministers of Youth & Music there. His Christian influence and testimony will be long lasting. May the Holy Spirit comfort you in your time of sorrow.

I saw him at work many days over the last 10 years, but literally everytime he saw me, Yancy was always so faithful to ask how my husband was doing. He always shared stories of how proud he was of all his children too. He could be so unintentionally funny and I'll cherish my memories of our laughter. And he never left without saying "I'm praying for you guys." I love him and miss him. Please know we're praying for his family; God bless you.

To the family of Yancey our prayers are with you. May God strengthen you and bless you with a divine ability to rejoice. For Yancey is not dead but is living in a new city. How beautiful that he has run the race, fought the fight, and has received the crown. To Mrs. Pat be proud one of your blessings has triumphantly crossed the finish line.

February 17, 2011

I haven't seen Yancy for years. In high school Yancy and I knew each other because I loved to water ski and he loved to surf. When we'd pass each other in the hall when changing class, he'd say spray and I would get in a crouch position with one arm out and say shoot the curl. I too have a personal relationship with Christ now. Knowing Him makes things like this easier to accept. I know he is being greatly missed. My sympathies go to his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. We will see him again. Steve Northup Pensacola,FL.

I remember Yancy when I was just a kid. I was sixteen and he was 28. We called him the old man then :) During Hurricane Frederick he watched over us boys like a father. Years later my wife and I ran into Yancy in his store. He began to share with us his conversion and what it was like when he met Jesus. Needless to say, he impressed us. He didn't know I was a Pastor and it was very refreshing to have someone telling me about Jesus. Since that day we often spoke of our Lord. I cried when I heard of his crossing but I also rejoiced because of his testimony. May our Lord comfort your family during these times.

My deepest sympathy goes to the family. When I first met Yancey I was a little kid from Va. Beach where Yancy and his crew (always of red hot surfers) would come to town and surf the ECSC. Then it would be off to Hatteras for the easterns. Eventually this ended up being all over the nation where I remember running into Yancey's crew. Yancey was always the troop leader and coach for all the guys. Yancy such a great surfer, gentleman, and good spirit to surfers.
Thanks for sharing him,
