Retired Andrews Obituary

Retired Maj. General Edward L. Andrews
Retired Maj. General Edward L. Andrews, 76 of Petaluma lost his two year battle with (multiple myeloma) cancer on February 3, 2021.
Ed was born in Quantico, VA, the son of a proud Marine, and was raised in Redding, PA. After high school graduation, he attended the US Military Academy, West Point class of 1966 and spent the next 33 years traveling the world as a military officer. His career included wartime service in Vietnam and Desert Storm, three tours in Germany, and assignments in Korea and stateside. He retired in 1999 as commanding general of the Army's Test and Evaluation command at Proving Grounds at Aberdeen, MD. Ed earned dual master's degree at Stanford in mechanical and industrial engineering and is a graduate of both the US Army War College at Carlisle, PA and the US Army Command and the General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS. After retirement Ed served as a consultant for multiple defense companies and was also selected to serve on the CA Governor's Commission guiding efforts to downsize the state's military bases.
Ed met his wife Alice Hartzel from Petaluma on a blind date in Chicago as a military cadet and they were married in Petaluma in 1967 where her father was pastor of St. John's Episcopal Church. This triggered his love of Northern California and following military service, Ed and Allie retired to Petaluma.
It was here that Ed continued his lifelong passion for golf as an active member of Petaluma Golf & Country Club, where he met many friends and shared stories at the 19th hole. He was also a member of SIR (Sons in Retirement) where he served a president (Big Sir) of the local branch and a member of the Presidio Yacht Club where he sailed the San Francisco Bay. Other retirement highlights included fly fishing and hunting trips with his son and dog, Beau, a golfing tour of Scotland, an Alaskan fishing trip, and multiple trips with his wife.
Ed is survived by his wife of 52 years, Allie; his son Jeff and his wife Sophie of Petaluma; his daughter Ashley Edwards and her husband Chris of Melbourne Beach, Florida; and brother Glen Andrews (partner Michele) of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; Samantha and Sasha Andrews of Petaluma and Asher, Micah, Jesse, Shea and Alice of Florida.
Interment ceremonies with full military honors will be held outdoors at Cypress Hill Memorial Park, 430 Magnolia Avenue, Petaluma on Friday, February 26th at 2 pm. The family requests that donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Jacksonville, Florida.

Dear Allie, Ashley, Jeff, and family: Like Beverly and Robin Fergusson, who have already contributed to this Guest Book, I am deeply saddened by the passing of my longtime friend and fellow soldier, Ed Andrews. Although we were cadets at West Point at the same time, overlapping for three of our four years at the U.S. Military Academy, we didn't get to know each other well until we served together in the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Germany in the early 1980s. Not only did Ed and I begin our friendship in the Marine Division, but our families grew close during those wonderful years in Wurzburg, especially Ashley and Robin. I am fortunate to have known Ed professionally and as a friend over the years and have a wonderful memory of attending his retirement ceremony in 1999 at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland where he was honored after commanding the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command in the final years of his superb 33-year military career.

Eddy and I were high school classmates, Reading Senior High Class of 1962. We were in 11th grade chemistry class. I always remembered his pleasant nature. I remembered his desire to serve in the U.S. Army and was delighted when he went to West Point. Thank you General for your service to our nation and to your family.

Dear Ashley, Allie, Jeff & family - my deepest condolences to you all. General Andrews - my God - what an extraordinary patriarch - a tremendous legacy. I remember how hard he would make me laugh as a child - even if he was being "serious" & I imagine he is playing golf, driving his 911 Porsche and laughing heartily as he sails on in heaven watching over all of you. Sending you all tremendous love at this time and always.

Dear, Allie, Ashley, Jeff, and your families, Jody and I offer our deepest condolences on the loss of your amazing husband and father. In the short time that we have known your family we have grown to love all of you. General Andrews was an incredible man of great integrity who so clearly loved and adored his family. It was always such a pleasure to see him with his grandsons, and laugh when they got a little too rambunctious. As a military man, Jody enjoyed many conversations with Ed and we all have the utmost respect and awe for his numerous accomplishments. Spending an evening over dinner and drinks and listening to his wonderful stories will remain some of our fondest memories. Thank you for sharing your time with us. Your entire family is in our prayers during this time. His absence will be felt by many.

Dear Allie, Ashley, Jeff and family, I am so sorry to hear about Ed’s passing. I remember Ed as being, not only a great soldier, but as a fun, loving, Dad and husband. I know he loved all his grandkids too. Our time together in Germany left Robin with a best friend for life with Ashley and gave us wonderful memories as friends. He left a lasting, positive, impression on all he met. Allie, I wish you comfort and love at this sad time.

I Will miss being with you Daddy. I still had so much to learn from you. There will be great sadness in our lives for a very long time but I know you are at peace and watching over us all. I love you so much and am very proud to call you my father.

I served with Ed Andrews in the 1st Infantry Division when he was assistant division commander for support. Ed was a fine man who could criticize my effort in maintenance of my tank battalion and make me feel good about it. He was a teacher, coach and mentor. He was never means spirited. I wish I had known him better. God Bless you Ed. Duty First!
