Alexander Su Obituary

Dr. Alexander K. Su, 76, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021 following an arduous battle with a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Adored by his family and relatives, he was a gifted physician who specialized in hematology, oncology and internal medicine. Alex served his patients with care, practicing for decades at his private offices in Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Portsmouth, as well as at Chesapeake General Hospital, Obici Memorial Hospital, Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth General Hospital, and later with Virginia Oncology Associates and the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center. His colleagues and patients remember him as a kind, compassionate, hard-working doctor who could often be found checking in on his patients in the hospital late at night, generously giving his time to answer questions and provide extra support for family and friends. Alex also volunteered at the Western Tidewater Free Clinic offering excellent care to the under-served and in 2010 was named Volunteer of the Year. He lived a rich life of humble service to his fellow man, showing kindness and respect to all, without regard to rank or title.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Alex lived in Chesapeake, Virginia for over 40 years. He is survived by his beloved wife and three daughters, two grandchildren, his sister, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his brother Dr. Robert K. Su, and sisters Lila, Ling-mai, and Judy. His family and friends affectionately remember the warmth of Alex's wonderful smile and joyful laughter as well as his deep love for classical music and nature.

Due to COVID-19, the family will not be receiving in-person visitation at this time. Cards with remembrances or condolences can be sent to Loving Funeral Home at 3225 Academy Ave., Portsmouth, VA, and registration information for a Zoom memorial service to celebrate Alex's life with immediate family members can also be obtained through the funeral home. Online request may be made at [email protected] and phone request may be made at 757.484.3373. Online condolences may be made at www.LovingFuneralHome.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Dr. Alexander K. Su's name to the CurePSP foundation (1216 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10001 or online at psp.org/iwanttohelp/ways-to-give/). The family encourages everyone to learn more about Progressive Supranuclear Palsy since early misdiagnoses can lead to significant emotional distress for patients and delays in initiating treatment.

I am saddened to learn of the death of Dr Su from this horrible rare disease. I worked with Dr Su at CGH during the 80s and 90s. What an incredible kind, caring , knowledgeable, exceptional physician and person. He spent hours at CGH after a full day of seeing patients in his office. His dedication to his patients went beyond the norm. Always a pleasant demeanor. A brilliant man. My sincere condolences to his family.
