Alfred Mitchell Obituary

A. Thomas Mitchell Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Alfred Thomas Mitchell Jr., 64, passed away Jan. 19, 2009, in a local hospital. During his years as a tackle shop owner, he helped and touched many peoples lives. He was also a former member of the Hatteras Marlin Club. He contributed to The Billfish Foundation, and The Coastal Conservation Association and gave unselfishly to every other inshore and offshore fishing foundation in the state of Virginia. Survivors include his son, Todd A. Mitchell of Virginia Beach. A reception will follow at Marina Shores Yacht Club following the service.

I guess this is goodbye to my bro who taught me how to fish some 20 years ago from the ghetto. With so many new tackle shops so close to home I always found myself on the road to the ghetto because Tom would always make you feel at home. In today's world so full of dispare Tom was truely a man that loved to share! Tom was quick with a joke or to take a poke. Through it all, the best of all, Tom had no trouble telling a true friend he loved them. For I have heard him say it to me and I have said the same to him. I wish you the best of times and tight lines! Your friend, Greg

One meets many friends in life but the true friends can be counted on one hand. Tom was a true friend. Our times together, weather fishing in the Bahamas or chatting at the Tackle shop made lasting memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Bill and I have known Tom for about 20yrs. Although we had lost touch the last few years, you always knew Tom was there if you needed him, even if it didn't concern fishing. We spent many hours at the tackle shop on Granby Street listening and contributing to the fishing stories, helping with inventory and customers and learning from his wealth of information. Our girls loved spending time with there "Uncle Tom". He was a very special person, and touched many lives. We will miss him very much. God bless Tom and his family.
