Linda,

I did not have a chance to get to know Dan very well, but I did enjoy the stories you would tell at work. From reading all of these entries, he was obviously not only a very gifted radiologist, but also a cherished friend, respected colleague, valued mentor, treasured roommate, dedicated football fan, talented singer, seasoned fisherman, and a memorable comedian. All of that coupled with loving husband
and dedicated father make him someone who will go missed by all who loved him. I hope that all of the wonderful memories, thoughts and prayers posted here help you, John and Sara through your difficult time.

Linda: I am both stunned and saddened to hear of Dan's passing. I did not know Dan well, but after reading these wonderful tributes, it is evident that he was quite special. I know that you and your family must be so thankful for the time that you had with him, but your heart must also be heavy at such a tremendous loss. I wish there were words of comfort that I could impart, but I hope that knowing that some many people care about you will give you strength as you face the days ahead. May you find comfort and peace knowing that Dan will live on in your heart, in your memories and in your children. With deepest sympathy,

Dear Pat, Ed, Bruce, Holly, Linda and children:
We knew Dan from infancy as we are close friends of Pat and Ed, actually childhood friends of Pat, Dan's mother. We watched this wonderful couple make a loving home, a happy and strong environment for their beautiful children, Dan, Bruce and Holly. With much love and pride they supported their talents, educations and their ability to pursue their dreams. We are so saddened that he has been taken from all of you too soon. We did not have the opportunity to know Dan as an adult but know that the presence in his life of such loving parents and siblings, helped make him the wonderful caring person that he was.
To Linda and children; our hearts are heavy for your loss and we will remember you in our thoughts and prayers.
To Bruce and Holly; be assured that our prayers are being offered up on behalf of each of you and you will be kept close to our hearts.

I feel very lucky to have lived with Dan for four years at UVA as an undergraduate. His sense of humor, intellect and kindness made living with him a fun and rewarding time. We went to many UVA football and basketball games together cheering for the Wahoos in victory or defeat. We listened to music, watched David Letterman, ate late night pizzas and countless other college activities. Dan is a major part of many fond college memories for me and many others I know. Dan was a wonderful person and we are all lucky to have shared part of our lives with him. May God provide you peace and comfort during this difficult time but also know that Dan's spirit and our memories of him carry on.

Dear Kothmann Family,
I was so sad to hear about Dan. I was in school with Dan from elementary through college at UVa. He was always the tallest and smartest boy in the class! Dan was liked by everyone. What a great loss. I wish you peace.

Dear Kothmann family -

I'm so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. I was privileged to know Dan back in high school. He helped me through Chemistry 2 and he and I survived wearing the ugliest tuxedoes in history as part of Churchill's Chamber Choir.

My deepest sympathy to your family. May God bless you and comfort you.

Dear Kothmann family,
I knew Dan in highschool and remember him fondly from a capella and chamber choir. One of our favorite choir songs was "The Marosa" or Psalm 23:

For Dan- "The Lord's My Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me down to lie. In pastures green he leadeth me the quiet waters by..." May you be at peace.

My prayers are with you all...

I had the honor of living with Dan during his first year at UVA and remember his laughter and sense of humor like it was yesterday. I am glad I was able to share that amazing time with him. It is clear as I read through the words left by people he touched through the years that Dan's sincere care for those around him, his wonderful sense of humor, and his intellectual brilliance came together beautifully in a life of monumental and permanent impact. To his wife, children, and extended friends and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences at this extremely difficult time.

Pat, Ed, Holly and Bruce.

Dr. Long

Dearest Linda,

I was truly destressed when Lisa called to tell of Dan's death. As I sat Tuesday next to my husband's death bed my heart ached for us both. Your voice was always so sweet when you would speak of Dan and I know you will truly miss him. As you were celebrating Dan's life at your home my Jimmy died in mine.
My heart mourned for my love of 41 years and I know you were mourning for the future you would have had with Dan. I am always here anytime day or night if you need to talk to someone who will almost know exactly how you feel. Please know you are in my prayers. Gale

Dr. Long, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Kothmann and playing his trivia. We would discuss the Steelers games and he would teach me if I had medical questions. He was a very smart and nice man. He will be missed tramendusly. He was very proud of his family as well. He would share the family vaccation photos with us. I will always remember him every Christmas with each and every ornament I have from him and every Steelers game I watch. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this trying time and may God give you the peace you need to make it through these days and the ones ahead. I feel such great sorrow.

Dan, Fred Grejda and I lived a wonderful childhood together in Pittsburgh. These memories will always be with me, even though Dan has moved on to a higher calling. We had sleepovers in Dan's treehouse, played hockey in Hal's driveway, and played football with the Big Kids vs. the Little Kids (all our little brothers and their friends) in Fred's side yard. I was lucky enough to see Dan periodically through our college and medical school years - and remember well a round of golf he treated me to at the UVA golf course. Dan was everything you would want in a friend. All the Buergers will be praying for the Kothmann family.

I was terribly saddened to hear of Dan's passing. I had the privilege of singing with him in the UVA Glee Club, and I remember him as a young man of incredible kindness. I hope that many former Glee Clubbers can join their voices in celebration of his life and his love of the group. ALthough I cannot be there, I will be singing in my heart and offering prayers for peace and healing for your family.

Dear Linda, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kothmann, Bruce, and Holly,
Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am to hear of Dan's passing. He was a loving husband, a proud father, a perfect son, and an admirable big brother.
Growing up across the street from the Kothmann's was a treat in itself. They were practically my second family. Dan, Bruce, and Holly were like the Three Musketeers. They were always together. Their love and support for one another is still as strong as ever and that bond will endure forever.

My deepest condolences are with all of you during this very difficult time. Dan will never be forgotten.

October 20, 2008

Dr Long and Family,
Dan was my first friend in our old Pittsburgh neighborhood.
We spent many a summer day playing baseball, football, and tennis with the old Kingsdale gang. Life took us in different directions as we went to college, pursed our careers and moved away form Pittsburgh. The stories of our childhood and memories of good times with Dan are never far from my thoughts.

I send you condolences and prayers from both me and my wife Madeline. Dan always had a smile, a good word and sense of humor that kept the old gang laughing.

I've worked with Dr. Kothmann for two years and I truely enjoyed working with him. He always had us cracking up here with his music triva questions and jokes. He always made sure to keep the daily break section of the newspaper for me to read the horoscopes because he wanted to know "what's going on today?" He will be greatly missed around our office, it will not be the same without him here.

As a friend and instructor of Dan during his residency and fellowship in Jacksonville I had the pleasure and honor to work with him in the hospital and enjoy his company on the golf course away from work. He was an outstanding person and a talented and knowledgeable physician. Everyone who knew Dan respected and liked him for these qualities. I am happy that our paths crossed for a five year period and very saddened that such a fine individual is no longer with us. I will always appreciate the impact he made on my life and the many great memories he left me.
