Edward Curry Obituary

Edward Curry

Virginia Beach - Edward Dayne Curry, 90, died peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

An Allstate Insurance executive for over thirty years, he rose through the corporate ranks and after retirement eventually formed his own consulting company, Target Marketing. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Edward served as a Navy medical corpsman on the destroyer the USS Damato during World War II. After the war, he graduated from Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston) in Charleston, West.Virginia, where he met his future wife, Letha Shelton. She became the love of his life and they were married fifty-two years and had three children, Lynne, Richard, and Gregory.

An outgoing man with a wry sense of humor, Edward credited his experience in the military with teaching him the skills he would deploy managing and troubleshooting Allstate's operations across the United States. He often said that his first job selling magazines door to door when he was a boy in Charleston laid the foundation for the expertise he would later develop in sales and marketing. Edward loved traveling with his wife, and they often re-visited their favorite cities in the US and made many trips to Europe and Asia. His curiosity and warmth earned him friends around the world, but his heart was always in West Virginia. He was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer basketball fan and a regular at the horse races-where he lost more than he won, but not by so much to stop him from going.

In his later years, he developed a passion for writing and compiled a series of adventure thrillers set in Guatemala and Mexico. He was often seen late at night pounding away at his computer keyboard. His latest novel was Drones over Machu Picchu.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Letha Shelton Curry, and son, Richard Curry. He is survived by his daughter, Lynne Curry, and son, Gregory Curry, and his wife, Ann; and his grandchildren, Daniel and Benjamin Chinoy, and Michelle, Timothy, and Christopher Curry; and his sister, Margaret McClure.

A celebration of his life will be held at Edward's home at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, May 24th. The address is 963 Quail Run Quay, Virginia Beach, Va. 23452. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the University of Charleston or one of Edward's preferred charities, St. Labre Indian School. (University of Charleston, Office of Advancement, 2300 MacCorkle Avenue, SE, Charleston, WV 25304 or [email protected]; St. Labre Indian School, PO Box 216, Ashland, MT 59003-9989)

I miss Ed very much. We grew up a few blocks from each other and he married my best friend, Lee, in college. I was the only person at their wedding and through the years our two couples visited back and forth no matter where we were living. So many good times and memories. Lee and I cruised together. After her death Ed was often consumed with the loss and would call me to discuss what we were doing to deal with losing the loves of our lives. I shall always miss his calls.

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Curry's passing and that of his son, Richard, but I know that he is thrilled to be reunited with his wife, who I recall him lovingly refer to as "Tootsie". Mr. Curry and I met when I worked at Virginia Beach General Hospital. We became fast friends and I edited one of his books. I had lost touch with him since I changed jobs about a year and a half ago, although I have thought of him often. May you rest in peace, my dear friend! Thoughts and prayers for your family.

I knew something must be wrong because I've left messages for Ed and Lynne the past few months that were never returned. He and Lee were close friends of mine for over 70 yrs. We grew up together and I will miss him and his joyful and pragmatic attitude so much. I know he is with his Lee and Ricky now. Peace be with you, Ed.
