Edward Shames Obituary

Edward D. Shames, age 99, passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2021.

Ed was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 13, 1922, to the late David and Sadie Shames. In August, 1942, Ed was called to duty in World War II. During the war, he was a member of the renowned Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division now known globally as the "Band of Brothers." Ed was involved in some of the most important battles of the war. He made his first combat jump into Normandy on D-Day as part of Operation Overlord. He volunteered for Operation Pegasus and then fought with Easy Company in Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne. Ed gained a reputation as a stubborn and very outspoken soldier who demanded the highest of standards from himself and his fellow soldiers. He not only earned the respect of his men, but was recognized by command for outstanding leadership and on June 13, 1944, he received a battlefield commission to Second Lieutenant. This made him the first non-commissioned officer in the Third Battalion to receive a commission in Normandy. In Germany, he was the first member of the 101st to enter Dachau concentration camp, just days after its liberation. When Germany surrendered, Ed and his men of Easy Company entered Hitler's Eagle's Nest where Ed managed to acquire a few bottles of cognac, a label indicating they were "for the Fuhrer's use only." Later, he would use the cognac to toast his oldest son's Bar Mitzvah. Ed was the last surviving officer and oldest surviving member of the "Band of Brothers." On November 6, 2021, the American Veterans Center at its annual Veterans Conference and Honors program gave a final toast to Ed and presented him with the distinguished Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Wings of Valor Award.

After the war, Ed worked for the National Security Agency as an expert on Middle East affairs. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve Division and later retired as a Colonel.

Ed was preceded in death by his devoted and beloved wife, Ida. They had a beautiful and loving marriage for 73 years. They traveled the world together making lifelong friends. Ed is survived by his beloved family: his sons, Steven (Linda) and Douglas (Ilene); his grandchildren, Sarah (Matthew), Samuel (Holly), Aaron (Rachel), and Rebecca (Anthony); and his 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Raya Mektesheva for her loving care and support of Ed.

A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. with Cantor David Proser officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his honor (memory) may be sent to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516 and the American Veterans Center, 1100 N. Glebe Rd., Suite 910, Arlington, VA 22201. Online condolences may be offered to the family at:

Just by chance I met one of you sons with your Dad in Cox outlet store. He was standing tall with his Airborne ball cap. He answered some of my questions and I was proud of him and proud to talk with him. God watched over him and we should all be grateful for his presence and service to our country.

Sending my sympathy and prayers. What a legacy to read and the memories it inspired. My father was also in the 101st Airborne, 506th regiment, but was in the 2nd battalion company F. There´s a chance they might have met, and what brave men they were.
God Bless their memories.

Edward Shames was my great grandfather, but I knew him as Zade. The one who had the most amazing stories to tell, and even at 99 years young, still remembered all of us, and would light up whenever we visited. At the american Valor, his smile brightened the room, and you could see really how happy he was to be there, surrounded by people who cared about him, while telling his famous stories. His memory will live on with me, and the rest of his family and friends hearts. Love you Zade. <3

I had the honour of playing Col Ed Shames in Band of Brothers. At the time, everything happened so quickly, I never had the chance to look into what he was really like. I only wish I'd have been able to get some of his thoughts before shooting. Sadly, some scenes that didn't make the final cut, showed him courageously leading his men into battle. He was brave, honourable and clearly loved his family. I was recently given his book and look forward to diving into it, to learn more about him. Condolences and thoughts with your family. Best. Ed was an amazing man. Dad & myself spent many an event together with other vets and friends. I never tired of his stories, or his style in telling them, taking the listener to the apex, pause for a bit, and then sometines start to walk away. Listeners would respond by begging him to hear the rest of the story and he would turn and oblige. It was great fun when Dad and he went back and forth, both quick witted, each with their own style. On the road, it was one adventure after the next, but when it came to honoring other vets or those who passed away during WWII or other conflicts, these men would snap to attention in full respect. Ed was a model of a loyal loving husband, a trait true to my Dad as well. His tough straight talk was his character to the core, soften by his love of his family and his fellow soldiers. His steel eyes would twinkle when talking of both. Ed will be missed indeed. Currahee!
