Elvertia Vaughan Obituary

Elvertia A. Vaughan CHESAPEAKE - Elvertia A. Vaughan, 90, of the 500 block of Renaissance Court, died June 24, 2009. She was born March 15, 1919, to parents James Allen and Nellie B. Alston in Embro, N.C. She was loved for her warm smile and gentle spirit which she displayed all of her life. As a young woman, Elvertia moved to Portsmouth where she later met and married John Raymond Vaughan. She retired as head cook in the Norfolk Public Schools (W.H. Taylor Elementary) where she worked for more than 30 years. She was baptized and joined the Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church, Macon, N.C., at a young age and became a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Norfolk, in early 1950; she remained a member until her death. She will be greatly missed by loved ones: daughter, Elizabeth V. Eccles; sons, Leon, Clifton and Shelvin; stepson, Raymond; one grandson, four granddaughters, one great-grandson, one sister, three brothers, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Burial will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Macon, N.C. Graves Funeral Home is in charge. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be made to the Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church Capital Campaign or Mount Zion Baptist Church Building Fund in honor of Elvertia Vaughan. www.gravesfuneralhomeinc.com.

The DeLoatch family offers their condolences in the loss of your mother. I will always remember your mother's wonderful smile and her kindness through the years in growing up at Mt. Zion.
