Freddie DeLaCruz Obituary

Freddie DeLaCruz, Sr.

Va Beach - Freddie F. DeLaCruz, Sr., 94, passed away on June 1, 2017, surrounded by his beloved family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Estelle Frances and his son-in-law, Bruce Butler, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Maria, of 31 years. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Freddie DeLaCruz, Jr., and his wife, Gilda, and their daughters, Lauren and Rachael; Chris Butler and her children, Bruce, Jr., Tim, and Amie; Carmen Childress and her husband, Larry, and sons, Brian and Casey; Cynthia Outland and her partner, Glen Silloway, and her son, Jacob; and Roger DeLaCruz; nine great-grandchildren and Maria's loving family.

Freddie was born on October 14, 1922, in San Marcelino, Zambales, Philippines. In 1945, he joined the United States Navy. On June 27, 1948, Freddie received his Certificate of Naturalization becoming a United States citizen. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and proudly retired after 21 years of service. As a civilian, he used the leadership skills learned as a steward to begin his management career at McDonald's and Hardee's restaurants until he retired from actively working in 1984.

To reconnect with their heritage, he and Maria joined the Zambales Association of Tidewater. He served as business manager and became President from 1997 to 1999. Among their many accomplishments, Freddie and Maria were awarded Parents of the Year Award in 1995 and were recognized for Outstanding Service and Dedication for several years.

To the DeLaCruz family - I am sorry to hear of Mr. DeLaCruz's passing. Many years ago, Mr. DeLaCruz hired me to work at McDonalds at Birchwood after I had been fired from my previous job. I was very immature, I had been fired from a job and he hired me anyway. I learned a lot about hard work and responsibility from him. I went on to have a successful life and career, and over the years I have thought of him and wondered how he was doing. It brings me joy to see that he lived a long and fruitful life. My prayers are with you in your time of grief.

Mr. DeLaCruz was the patriarch of a wonderful family that he loved and who loved him dearly in return. I know how much you all will miss him! I wish I could be there to honor his life, but I will be with my mom. I will be thinking of you and remembering the good times I spent with your family.
