Gail Sutliff Obituary

Gail Burton Sutliff

Chesapeake, VA/Smith County, TN - Gail Burton Sutliff, 66, formerly of Chesapeake, VA, passed peacefully from this earthly plane on June 1, 2015 surrounded by family. Funeral services were conducted by her brother in Christ, Kevin Owen, on June 5th followed by internment in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Pallbearers: Craig McCarthy, Brad McCarthy, Brian Moore, Ernie Floyd, Seth McCollough, and Jason Shipley.

Born in Americus, GA on June 22, 1948 Gail was a baptized believer and an active member of the Lord's Body. Having received a BS in Education from Auburn University and later a Masters from Old Dominion University, Gail's love of education led her to become a teacher in the Chesapeake School System where she dedicated 25 years of her life, touching many young minds. Also possessing a passion for history and genealogy, she spent many summer breaks traveling with her four daughters to countless historical sites and battlegrounds. This passion also led to her involvement in various historical societies to include the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as a past Regent, the UDC, the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Colonists. Gail enjoyed reading novels of all genres, traveling abroad, shopping and going to music concerts. She had a zest for all things in life, especially for finding ways to help others. Her generosity and ever present support and encouragement to friends and family through visits, cards, texts and phone calls is a large part of her legacy.

Gail was a devoted wife to her husband of over 46 years, raised four beautiful daughters and was "Nayna" to three special grandchildren. She will be forever loved and missed.

Gail is survived by her husband, Richard Sutliff, and children Susan (Jason) Shipley, Melissa (Ernie) Floyd, Eryn Sutliff and Jennifer (Seth) McCollough; grandchildren: Brice, Barrett, and Vera Floyd; parents William and Dorothy Burton; and siblings Bill Burton Jr., Ann DeReiemer, Susan McCarthy, Barbara Moore and Jim Burton.

I will miss Gail's sweet, gentle disposition and her kind way. She always had time for you. Sometimes she or I would ask the other, "Have you seen any good movies lately?" And then we would talk all about one we had watched. I remember one of her favorites was 'Sweet Home Alabama'. Gail was truly a Southern Lady!
