Garland Moody Obituary


Garland T. Moody SUFFOLK - Garland Talmadge Moody, 87, passed away July 31, 2008. A native of Suffolk, he was the son of the late George Thomas Moody and Effie Howell Moody. He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served his country in World War II. Garland retired after 36 1/2 years as a machinist in Shop 31 of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. He was a charter member of Wilroy Baptist Church where he served as a lifetime deacon, a trustee and a choir member for more than 45 years. He was a former member of Wilroy Ruritan Club and the American Legion Post 57. Garland is survived by his wife of 64 years, Juanita Harrell Moody; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy M. Turner and Leland G. Turner; a son and daughter-in-law, Garland Talmadge Moody Jr. and Louise S. Moody; four grandchildren, Kim, Ryan, Shannon and Daphne; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Brayden, all of Suffolk; five sisters and brothers-in-laws, Anne Rountree of Suffolk, Isabel Wills of Florida, Jacqulin Shackelford of Suffolk, Tommy and Buck Buchanan of Suffolk, and Shirley and Tommy Underwood of Suffolk. A funeral with military honors will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Wilroy Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Collins and Timothy Rawls officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk for visitation. Memorial donations may be given to Wilroy Baptist Church Building Fund, 306 Williams Road, Suffolk, VA 23434 or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 1224, Franklin, VA 23851.
