Chesapeake - Gary Steven McCarson, 55, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 in his residence. He was a native of Portales, New Mexico and was the son of Al Joe McCarson and the late Betty June Hardisty McCarson. He has been a resident of Chesapeake since 1991. Gary served his country for 35 years with active duty, contractor and civil service duty. In 1980 he enlisted in the US Navy as a Sonar Technician and served on various ships before he was honorably discharged in 1986. After his active duty service, he worked as a Department of Defense Contractor until 2003 when he entered the DoD civil service where he applied his sonar expertise at the Fleet Technical Support Center, Atlantic and subsequently at Combat Direction Systems Activity, Dam Neck. He was recognized as a leader within the Surface Ship Sonar logistics community.

Survivors include his loving wife of 20 years, Margaret Geraci McCarson of Chesapeake, his father of Clovis, New Mexico, his sisters; Vicki McCarson Wethington and her husband Monty of Farmington, New Mexico, Judy McCarson Logan of Farmington, New Mexico his brothers; Frank McCarson and his wife Tina of Reno, Nevada and Brad McCarson of Clovis, New Mexico and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral Services will be held in the Chesapeake chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 12:30 PM followed by interment with military honors at 2:15 PM in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. The Reverend Jerry Kilyk will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the funeral home.
