Georgina Rawles Obituary

Georgina M. Rawles RICHMOND - Georgina Marraccini Rawles died at home Feb. 27, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, James White Rawles and sister, Livia M. Whittall. Mrs. Rawles was the daughter of Ulric Charles Paul Marraccini and Mabel Whittall Marraccini. She was born at her family home, "Bournabat," in Smyrna (modern-day Izmir), Turkey, in 1918, to a family of British colonial expatriates who, by Act of Parliament, received the charter for the Levant Company in 1581 to facilitate the "Spice Road" trade. In 1920, the family left Turkey, on the cusp of that country's civil war, taking up subsequent residencies in Tunis (North Africa), Rome, Athens and Geneva. Mrs. Rawles was a graduate of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where she studied political science. Her facility with numerous languages led, ultimately, to her assistance during World War II as a translator for both the Allied armies and the American Red Cross. At the start of World War II, at age 20, she was sent to live in Richmond with her aunt and uncle, Marie Helena Marraccini Archbell and the American tobacconist, Jehu Archbell. An avid equestrian, she served, during the War, as the first female huntsman for Deep Run Hunt Club. Mrs. Rawles was a committed philanthropist, indulging her love of the arts, culture, and the community through support of numerous organizations, including: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she was active on the council and a particular supporter of South Asian Art; the Maymont Foundation, from which she received the Benevolent Society Award in 2005; the Salvation Army, serving as Christmas Mother in 1986; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she served as a co-chair for Lenten lunches; the American Red Cross; the Richmond Symphony; and the Virginia Opera. She served on the Board of the following foundations: Edgar Allen Poe Museum, the Richmond Ballet, Planned Parenthood and the James Monroe Foundation, from which she received the James Monroe Distinguished Public Service award in 2003. Mrs. Rawles was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The James River Garden Club, The Deep Run Hunt Club, The Woman's Club, and the Country Club of Virginia. She is survived by five children, Marika Archbell Rawles, James White Rawles Jr., Elizabeth Rawles Cronly, Georgina Rawles Miller and Benjamin Watkins Rawles III; and 15 grandchildren, R. Boyd, James W. III, Alexander B. and Charles M. Rawles, Olivia Cronley Wages, John H.H., Benjamin C., William S. and Thomas R. Cronly; William S. IV, Georgina O., Katharine R. and T. Gray Miller, Cornelia S. and Louisa W. Rawles. A memorial service is planned for Monday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 9th and Grace Street, Richmond. Entombment will be private in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to one of the organizations mentioned above.

Rika,
I did not know about your mother until I read of her passing in the Poe Museum newsletter. I am so sorry for your loss, but your mother will live on in the memories of the people who knew her. I, personally, can remember several of our lively conversations pertaining to Edgar Allan Poe.
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Most Sincerely,
Martha

I shall always have the fondest of memories of a kind, generous and caring woman whose passion for life will certainly live on in her children, grandchildren and all who had the great good fortune to have known her.

I recall the first time I saw her, I was rather intimidated by her appearance. She seemed so much more refined than most people, but upon conversing with her, she was one of the sweetest ladies I could hope to talk to. It is such a great loss to this city to lose such a compassionate, classy lady. Many people could take a lesson from the way she treated others.

What a wonderful tribute given to Mom and Grandma describing the wonderful accomplishments of a special person from a special time in the 20th century. A champion and lover of life who passed on to her children and others that great quality. May Mrs. Rawles rest in peace with God. The Basmajian Family.

to Jamie, Rika, Lula Boo, You are in my thoughts and prayers. In life you run across a few unforgettable characters, Gina was one of them. Your day was always brightened by her. She always made you feel special. and you ALWAYS knew where you stood with Gina! it was my pleasure to sell here several vehicles! The dealership loved it when Gina would come by! What a very cool Lady! She may have come from oversea's, but to me she represented what every Virginian should aspire to be! Not a Fake bone in her body. I comsidered it an honor to call her a friend ! Hold on to the great memories!! Johnny Cates

Mrs. Rawles and her family have been long time supporters of Maymont. Mrs. Rawles was particularly an advocate for preservation and conservation for the decorative arts and furnishings of Maymont House Museum. Mrs. Rawles helped her friend Mary Tyler Cheek McClenahan found the Maymont House Benevolent Society in 1983 for the sole purpose of raising funds for restoration and conservation projects at the house museum. This group continues today raising over $50,000 annually for this purpose. In 2005, Mrs. Rawles was the recipient of Maymont’s Benevolent Society award in recognition of her distinguished commitment to advancing the cause of Maymont’s historical collections and landscape.

The Maymont Foundation wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the family. Mrs. Rawles memory and legacy will continue at Maymont for all time.
