Gerald Larson Obituary

Gerald G. Larson SUFFOLK - After a very short battle with cancer, retired Virginia Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Gerald G. Larson passed away suddenly July 2, 2011 at home, surrounded by his family, friends and beloved dog, Patches. Gerry was born in Rush City, Minn., on July 25, 1941 and was a graduate of Christopher Newport University. He enlisted in the Navy in 1959, and was stationed at Little Creek Naval Base where he joined the Underwater Water Demolition Team 21 (now Seal Team 4). He was a non-combat veteran of the Vietnam War and had the honor of participating in the training efforts for the Mercury Spacecraft Recovery Program. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. He met Beverly A. Jordan at the Little Creek Navy Base, and they married Aug. 22, 1964. After retiring from the Virginia Beach Fire Department, his passion turned to his grandchildren, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. He mentored many young boys through scouting, including two of his grandsons, Jeffrey Sabatino and Alex Palagyi to the rank of Eagle Scout. He also helped his grandsons, Seva Karlov and Matt Palagyi achieve the highest rank in Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light. In addition, he had three granddaughters, Kaitlyn Sabatino, Lauren Palagyi and Madison Belcher, who are in the Girl Scouts. Gerry also served on the Committee of Boy Scout Troop 57 and Cub Scout Pack 89. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Beverly; three daughters, Lori Palagyi and husband Will, Lee Ann Sabatino-Belcher of Chesapeake and Kelly Karlov and husband Misha; four siblings, Karen Heger and husband Dick, Katherine Peterson and husband Roger, John Larson and Kris Webb; 15 grandchildren, Jeffrey Sabatino and wife Katelynn, Kaitlyn Sabatino, Alex Palagyi, Nik Karlov, Lauren Palagyi, Matthew Palagyi, Madison Belcher, Sasha Karlove, Seva Karlov, Aaron Belcher, Luka Karlov, Katya Karlov, Nadia Karlov, Val Karlov and Yarik Karlov; brothers and sisters in Christ, Jerry and Deannie Rogers and Ed and Kathy Brakob; and his "adopted" dad, Frank Kelly. Gerry was known throughout Tidewater as a man who could always be counted on for a joke, a laugh, a story, a word of wisdom, or a smile. He loved his church, his family, and his many friends. He will be missed greatly. A funeral will be held Friday, July 8, at 12:30 p.m. in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434 by Pastor Scott Benson. Burial will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pack 89, c/o Beech Grove United Methodist Church, 4251 Driver Lane, Suffolk, VA 23435. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

Dear Bev,Lori,Lee & Kelly,
We were so surprised and saddened to hear
about our good friend and camping buddy.
All of you are an important part of our family life and we sure had a lot of good times together. Sitting around the camp fire, making sumores, getting chased by geese at Sleepy Hole and so many more memorable moments. One time GG and I nearly knocked each other out when we woke to the fire alarm at Sta. One, we both bent over to grab our boots and pull on the bunkers at the same time. We head butted so hard we fell backward rubbing our heads and laughing. We were all so indestructable!
Our hearts go out to you as we share in your loss.

Dear Larson family, I considered Gerry a close friend and a wonderful mentor. I will never forget the long discussions over campfires long after the boys were in their sleeping bags. I will miss him dearly but he's looking down on all of us, smiling, and still wearing his shorts and t-shirts no matter what the weather!
Yours in Scouting, Chris Mulholland

Beverly and family,

I worked with GG for over twenty eight years in the fire service. It was a pleasure in every way. He was a firefighter’s chief. He always made sure everyone in his command was safe and secure on the fire ground and in the station. He was always there if you needed an ear just to listen. He was a great friend and mentor. He was very knowledgeable with his job, family and life. I leaned on him. A true Professional. He was never overpowering with opinion. He would listen to your ideas and if they matched the profile then he would let you run with it. A real morale builder, never a cross word. He will be missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.

Gerry, I will miss you very much. You've helped me get (push) my own boys, along with so many others, through scouts successfully. I could always count on you for help or a laugh and the Tigers sure loved seeing you every Tuesday. Keep an eye on us and give us a nudge or a kick in the seat when we need it most.
Bev, Lori, Lee Ann, and Kelly, thanks so much for sharing him with us. I am very sorry for your loss and you have my sincerest condolences.

From my very first Fire Station GG became my friend and mentor. He was a man's man, with forearms like Popeye that one never forgets. Later he became my Battalion Chief. Only a Firefighter can understand this, but with GG his men always came first. Their can be no higher compliment from the Fire Service. I can never remember when GG didn't have a smile on his face and be ready to jump in with any work that needed to be done. I will never forget GG and his example he set for all of us to live up to. He's one of those guys that helps shape your life. Thank you GG and thank you Beverly for always standing beside your wonderful husband.
