Glen Ayers Obituary

Glen O. Ayers
Chesapeake - Glen O. Ayers, 76, of Chesapeake, passed away Monday, June 3, 2013.
Born in Harvey, WV he was the son of the late Woodrow and Elsie Ayers. He was also predeceased by his brother, Woodrow Ayers, Jr. Glen retired in 1994 after 39 years of faithful service to this nation and the United States Government, both in the U.S. Navy and in Federal Service. Chief Petty Officer Ayers was based out of Norfolk where he retired as an Air Traffic Controller. As a civilian employee, Mr. Ayers worked with the Fleet Combat Direction Systems Support Activity, Dam Neck. Following his second retirement, he served another 10 years with American Systems as a network and IT specialist. He enjoyed gardening with his wife Shirley, researching family genealogy, trips to West Virginia and his son David's crab cakes. He was a long-time member of the Sunbeam Hunt Club. Glen was a true gentleman, loyal, hardworking and had a dry sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years Shirley L. Ayers; sons, David B. Ayers and wife Britta, Michael A. Ayers; a sister, Eileen; a brother, Carl, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 10 a.m., Monday, June 10, in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
The viewing will begin on Sunday with the family receiving friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6350 Center Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502. This was a charity Glen supported for his beloved Shirley.
The family would like to offer sincere gratitude to the ICU-2 staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center for their care and compassion.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Ayers family. Glen was always a joy to work when he was a member of the Requirements Engineering Department at Dam Neck. He had a great sense of humor and he always seemed to find a way to make people laugh….even at work!
