Hazel Tucker Horton

Virginia Beach - Hazel Tucker Horton, 72, formerly of Virginia Beach, died at home surrounded by her loving family December 8, 2016 in San Diego, CA after a courageous battle with cancer.

A 1962 graduate of Virginia Beach High School and 1966 graduate of the College of William and Mary, she had a long career teaching in Virginia Beach, retiring from Trantwood Elementary. She was honored as Teacher of the year and Reading Teacher of the Year. She was a lifelong advocate for children and literacy. In San Diego she organized senior citizens as mentors in the schools.

She was predeceased by her parents, Hazel and John Tucker and oldest sister "Gee" Fruit. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband Jay, children Jody Haskins of Va. Beach, Jennifer Franklin (Rich) and Jason Horton (Elizabeth) of California, sister Claudy Barnes (Tom) and brother Jack Tucker (Karen) of Va. Beach, seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hazel was a quick-witted, gracious and grounded woman who always thought of others.

The family will hold a private memorial in California. In lieu of flowers and in her memory read to a child, introduce a child to the library or donate to the VB Library
