Kathleen Fowlkes Obituary

Kathleen Callahan Fowlkes
May 25, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - A Mass of Christian Burial for Kathleen Callahan Fowlkes, 85, will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2022 at The Basilica of Saint Peter, with burial in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery at a later date. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00-6:30 p.m. Friday, June 3, 2022, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation until 8:00 p.m.
Ms. Fowlkes died Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Born in St. Cloud, Minnesota, she was a daughter of the late Firman William Callahan and Joeonetta Gebhardt Callahan. Following the family's move to Columbia shortly after WW II, Kathleen became an authentic South Carolinian. She was a retired Accounting Manager for Davis and Garvin Agency. Ms. Fowlkes enjoyed gardening, spending time with her grandchildren, praying for everyone, volunteering, and traveling- including Europe, Israel and most of the USA. She was a generous, strong mother, and loving grandmother. She was an active and life-long dedicated member of her beloved Saint Peter's. Kathleen spent many years as moderator for the Catholic Youth Organization, was a member of the Sodality, baked many a grandma's cookie for numerous church functions, and simply gave countless years of service to the parish. Thousands of Ft. Jackson Soldiers received a rosary hand made by Kathleen and her friends. According to her fellow residents of Whitehall, she was the best neighbor and truest friend.
Surviving are her sons, Robert F. Fowlkes, III of Port Orford, OR, William James Fowlkes of Woodlands, TX, and John Charles Fowlkes (Nancy Pursley) of Roswell, GA; daughters, Anna Mazzone (Will Lashley) of London, England, and Mary Fowlkes-Wheetley (Jamie Mitchum) of Woodstock, GA; brothers, Michael E. Callahan of Pawleys Island, SC and Timothy L. Callahan of France; sisters, Janice McGinty of Pawleys Island, SC; Terry Hicks of Columbia, SC, and Elizabeth Callahan of Pawleys Island, SC; and grandchildren, Wyatt D. Wheetley, Caitlin Wheetley, Alexis Fowlkes, Emily Fowlkes, Caroline Fowlkes, and Camryn Pursley.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Daniel J. Callahan, and Patrick F. Callahan, and her good friend Donald Frederick (The Biffer).
Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Catholic School, 1035 Hampton St., Columbia, SC 29201 or Cardinal Newman High School, 2945 Alpine Rd, Columbia, SC 29223.

Kathleen was a tough ole´ bird and a sweet mentor to me when I was in my late teens and twenties. I had the pleasure of working for her when I had limited life & employment skills. She was tough on me but helped mould my work ethic. Later, we enjoyed live music, dinners and wine together at Palmetto Place and Roach´s. I even got her dancing sometimes. I loved teasing her about her Wednesday trips to the "beautiful shop" and how she went to EVERYONE´s funeral. I sometimes questioned if she even knew the deceased. She was a great teacher, a sweet friend and a mom to many (by blood or not). I´m so sad I haven´t seen her in years but I´ve never forgotten her. XOXO. Sending my sincere condolences to Kathleen´s family and adopted family & friends.
