Herbert Redfield Obituary

Herbert C. Redfield Sr. NORFOLK - Capt. Herbert "Herb" C. Redfield Sr., 74, was born Sept. 8, 1933, passed away peacefully Jan. 30, 2008, at Sentara Leigh Hospital. A native of New Britain, Conn., the Captain resided in Norfolk. He retired after 39 years as head of arson investigations for the City of Norfolk Fire Department. He was credited with starting the Tidewater Regional Arson Panel (TRAP). Known as the quintessential "fire sleuth," Captain Redfield taught investigation courses to hundreds of firefighters across Hampton Roads and in Iceland, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. He was one of the first polygraph examiners in the Hampton Roads area and as such he performed many of the pre-employment exams for firefighters and sheriffs across the area. He was a longtime employee of Franklin Security Systems. Herb also retired from Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home after 20 years of service. Along with his extensive career in the fire department and law enforcement, he was a Mason with Norview Lodge No. 113. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jessie M. Redfield of Weldon, N.C.; two sisters, Pauline Hornkohl of New Mexico, Jeanette Fatella of Connecticut; his son, Herbert C. Redfield Jr. and his wife Candy; his daughter, Debra Pittman and her husband Roger; six grandchildren, Shauna Redfield, Herbert "HC" C. Redfield III, Michelle Fernandez, Michael Stocks, Mallory Barrington, Miles Barrington and three great-grandchildren. A special thanks to all the firefighters and friends for all the love, support and visits to the Captain during his final days. We know he enjoyed that time with each and every one of you and the walks down memory lane. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in Calvary Temple, 5639 Brickell Road, Norfolk, to be followed by a graveside service in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

I was a little girl of ten years old when I met Herbert. I thought he was the most wonderful man in the world, he was so smart, so handsome, and so good to us kids. He was my hero.

Now fifty five years later he is still my hero...I will always love Jessie and Herbert...both of them were so good to us kids...they put sunshine in our life.

Thank you Herbert. Thank you Jessie.

Love to you both,
Marie
