Jacqueline Falkenhan Obituary

Jacqueline Foxwell Falkenhan died of cancer complications on Oct. 5, 2018. She was born to Mildred Dunn Foxwell and Phillip Foxwell on Oct. 11, 1942 in Norfolk, VA at the end of WWII. She was predeceased by her latest husband Jeffrey Joseph Falkenhan of Seattle. She is survived by two children, William P. McCraken and Lisa R. McCracken Edmunds and her son, Jacqueline’s only grandchild, Chance T. McCracken. In addition she is survived by her sisters Linda Lou Foxwell Haase, Phylle Ann Foxwell, Cynthia Lee Foxwell and Robin Kay Foxwell Griffith. She attended Norview High School, experienced the closing of the schools due to segregation, and began her fight for the equality of the races and the abolition of useless wars. Protesting never ends, not even for the elderly and ill. She attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA where she was an honor student, met her husband, did research as an undergraduate, and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in physiological psychology in 1974. She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Norfolk where she served as a Newsletter Editor and a Women’s Group leader. She loved the visual arts and she and Cynthia Swaine would like to haunt the halls of the Chrysler Museum. Jacqueline was married three times and each husband took her into a different world. Skiing Montana powder snow made her feel like she could fly without wings. In Montana she discovered prejudice against Native Americans, she lived in a log cabin in the Gallatin Canyon, met an Irish mail-order-bride and a cattle baron’s daughter who lived through the Gold-Rush era. She worked on two ranches and enjoyed the incredible beauty of that state. To her dying day she preferred the cold of Montana to the heat and humidity of Coastal Virginia. Her second marriage to her into the world of folk music and the Folk Ghetto in downtown Norfolk, VA where she met the likes of Emmy Lou Harris and others who worked the circuit from New York to Florida. Her third marriage suited her best. She married an O.D.U. associate professor of history. As a life-long learner and a lover of books, she fit perfectly into this academic world. She very much enjoyed her long friendship with authors I.J. Parker and John Rosenman, both once English professors at Norfolk State University. She wishes them well. Jacqueline’s memorial service will be held at Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018. Interment of her ashes will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery next to Arlette Claflin at a later date. Jackie was my neighbor for 32 years. We often saw each other on early morning walks. For years she had weights on to help her keep up muscle tone. An artist, she had once said she was surprised that people liked her own work when she had exhibited it for the CP/R Art Walk. The colorful whimsical pieces I saw showed great talent and imagination.
She was a fan of science fiction as was Jeff. Our last conversation was on science fiction shows available on cable.
I was sorry to miss the memorial service yesterday. I will miss her cheerful smile and her determination to enjoy life no matter what.

Jane and I both miss Jacqueline and will mourn her passing, but we know she is at peace. We both have wonderful memories of her wit and intelligence. I was in a writers group with her for twenty years, and they are among the best of my life. John B. Rosenman
