James Via Obituary

James Dillard Via, M.D.

Norfolk - James Dillard Via, MD, 78, died at home on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. Born September 19, 1936 in Henry County, Virginia, he was the son of Sallie Mae Shelton Via and John William Via. Dr. Via graduated from Fieldale High School in Henry County, the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

For three years 1965 1968, between internship and residency, Dr. Via served as captain in the US Army in Bamberg, Germany. Following a residency at Norfolk General Hospital, Dr. Via started in private practice with Dr. Mason C. Andrews, Dr. William C. Andrews and Dr. Willette L. LeHew on July 1, 1971. Dr. Via delivered 7,510 babies over the course of his career, keeping careful handwritten records of each birth in a series of ledgers stretching from July 1971 until his last delivery in June 2004. Dr. Via was a pioneer in having families together in the labor and delivery room. He also promoted the use of epidural anesthesia during labor and delivery. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Fertility Society, the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Medical Society of Virginia, and the Norfolk Academy of Medicine. Dr. Via was a dedicated and caring physician, only officially retiring from The Group for Women in 2007 when his own health began to fail. Highly respected by his peers and beloved by his partners, Dr. Via truly loved his work and his patients.

An active member of First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Virginia, Dr.Via served the church community as an elder for many years as well as serving on various committees. He volunteered his time and talent; working as a physician for six weeks on a reservation in Claremore, Oklahoma and later joining a mission trip to Guatemala. Dr. Via brought joy and laughter to all he met in life.

He is survived by his two children, Anne Van Swearingen Via McCollough and her husband David Scott McCollough of New York City, and George Via of Kenai, Alaska; his only grandson, James Andrew Scott McCollough of New York City; and his brother, John William Via, Jr. and Mary P. Fox of Alexandria, Virginia; and his aunt, Lois Fulcher Quadrio of Fieldale, Virginia. He was a wonderful uncle to five nephews John William Via, III, Walter Stephenson Via, Henry Fleming Via, Christopher Lewis James Reid, and Lewis George Feuer and one niece Susan Michelle Reid. He was predeceased by his loving wife of fifty years, Marie Berry Matheke Via. His parents and his sister, Linda Via Reid, also predeceased him.

Burial was private. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13 at First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Virginia.

In June of 1986, I was a new graduate nurse in Labor and Delivery at Norfolk General Hospital. Dr Via was an attending OB/GYN. Through the years, Dr Via taught me so much and helped mold me into the nurse I am today. I remember him writing in his little black book about each and every baby he delivered. He had a great laugh and smile. He was also a great story teller. He will always be remembered as a great man and physician. My thougths and prayers are with his family

I moved to Norfolk in 1982, found out I was pregnant and Dr. Via's group was recommended to me. He was the first doctor I saw in the group and he made me feel so safe and secure during my pregnancy. He insisted he was going to deliver my daughter whether he was on call or not and he did. Twenty-two years later, he delivered my granddaughter, and he was my doctor until he retired. I have never felt so comfortable with a doctor and I have missed him greatly since he retired. Dr. Via was a truly dedicated and compassionate doctor.

I knew Dr. Via since I was a student nurse and he was a resident. He became my physician and he remained so until he retired. Dr. Via was such a wonderful caring physician and I was lucky to have had him deliver my first child. He was always such a kind man. I will always remember him and his wonderful laugh. Condolences to his children who he spoke of with pride to me on many occasions.

I offer my sincere condolences to you. Dr. Via delivered my daughter in 1977. When I arrived at the hospital that morning, he predicted almost to the minute the time that she would be born that night! He was a kind and special person and I was blessed to have him as my doctor until he retired. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I was so saddened to hear this. Dr. Via was such a loving, gentle man. My mother was his thirty-fourth patient. He delivered me, and he delivered my daughter in the summer of 2004. She was one of his last deliveries. I was so distraught when he retired before my son was born. I saw him from time to time around the office, so I was able to give him a hard time about it. Jokingly, of course. He was always smiling. Please accept my condolences on your loss. I'll remember him fondly.

I was a patient of Dr. Via after Dr. William Andrew retired. I would ask Dr. Via about Dr. Andrew since I knew they belong to the same church. I always felt close to him through Dr. Via. Dr. Via would convey my love & concerned to Dr. Andrew. Needless to say, I was sadden to learned of Dr. Andrews' passing via Dr. Via, as I am saddened by my wonderful Dr. Via's passing. He was a wonderful, caring person. May the family hold dear all the wonderful memories as well as teachings, love and all from Dr. Via. God bless all.

I was a patient of your Dad's from 1980 until he retired. He was my Dr for all three preganancies, I never "rotated" to the other docs because I loved going to Dr Via. He never was able to deliver any of my 3 kids, even though I tried to "wait" until he came on call.. that didn't work. He was a wonderful, caring person. I hope you all will be comforted in the fact that he was so well loved my many people in the community! I wont forget him, his birthday is the same exact day (and year) as my fathers! I'll continue to think of him!

Dr. Via and I worked together on Session of 1st Presbyterian Church. He became a dear brother and friend during those years. Jim loved his Lord and the congregation he served. His jovial manner and sense of humor made him the man you'd want to spend time with. He touched many people both as a physician and as a spiritual leader. I'm sure he'll be missed.

I feel blessed to have been a patient of Dr. Via's for 28 years. His generous wisdom, guidance and stories he shared with me at a time in my life I needed support the most will forever resonate in my heart. From his Native American stories I could see how Dr. Via freely shared his love of people as well as his unique understanding of each life he touched. Thank you Dr. Via for providing healing through laughter. It is my heartfelt wish your family celebrate the light you were while here on earth.
