Jimmy Chupik Obituary

Jimmy A. Chupik, of Portsmouth, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2023, with his beloved family by his side. Jimmy was born in Aquilla, Texas to Marie Chupik and Bohus "Bob" Chupik on June 25, 1945, and grew up farming with his five brothers and sisters. He left Texas for the United States Navy, where he served four years as a Radio Operator aboard the USS Guam.

It was the Navy that originally brought Jimmy to the region where he was to meet the love of his life, Joanne Chupik. He quickly grew to love Joanne, and her two children, and they married and had a son of their own. His devotion to his wife and children is his greatest legacy.

After Jimmy separated from the Navy, he entered the private sector as a telecommunications analyst with Bell Atlantic for over 30 years. Jimmy was never content with idle hands, and after retiring from Bell Atlantic, he went to work for the YWCA helping to manage the shelters that serve victims of domestic violence. In this vein of caring for his community, he was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Keely Council for over fifty years.

Jimmy liked to say he was a simple country boy. He eschewed frills and fanfare and was happiest working in his garden or tinkering with tools in the garage. Jimmy had a great mechanical mind, and he could fix anything. Above all, he was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren.

Jimmy leaves behind his devoted wife, Joanne; children Yvonne Keisel (Robin Neumeister), Ron Chupik (Elizabeth), and James Chupik (Ellen); grandchildren Spencer, Cameron, Sydney, and Rikardo.

The family will host a visitation at Metropolitan Funeral Services, 7246 Granby Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23505, on Sunday, June 11, 2023, from Noon to 4 p.m. Services will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, Virginia, on Monday, June 12, 2023, at 10 a.m. Reception to be held immediately following services. Jimmy and I worked together at C&P of VA back in the day. He was a great friend and was always there for everyone. We lost contact in the early 80s and never reconnected. My loss. I'm sure Jimmy is in heaven helping others and sharing his knowledge. RIP MY FRIEND

Joan always had a glow on her face and pride in her heart when she spoke of Jim. She never said " my husband" she always referred to him as " my Jim". Joan and I worked together and she and Jim welcomed us all on many occasions. On one special day, Jim prepared an entire holiday feast including ham and turkey with all the fixins. He was content to retreat into the background and have her host her coworkers, rather than bask in the glory of his delicious bounty. He was always kind, gracious and unassuming.
The way she looked at him would light up the room.
We should all know that kind of love.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim at the YWCA a few years back and I am so lucky to have known him. His energy was contagious, whether he was laughing with coworkers or making a witting comment about a project that was giving him trouble. He will be thoroughly missed, and my thoughts are with his family.
