Joseph DiJulio Obituary

Joseph Anthony DiJulio

Virginia Beach - Joseph "Joe" Anthony DiJulio, Virginia Beach, 56, passed away suddenly of cardiac arrest on Thursday, July 30, 2015. The beloved husband of Elizabeth "Betsy" DiJulio, brother of Tina and Terri Ann DiJulio, and uncle of Gabriella Duncan, Joe was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Theresa DiJulio.

Joe received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Indiana University and his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1985, where he served as an associate editor of the Journal of Transnational Law. In 1990, he joined the firm of Clark & Stant, which merged with Williams Mullen in 1999. A certified public accountant, Joe's practice concentrated on Estate Planning and Probate Law, private client & fiduciary services, business succession planning, fiduciary litigation, wealth transfer planning, and tax-exempt practice. Known for working closely with his clients to structure their estates, Joe also often wrote about and spoke on current estate planning topics.

A member of the Virginia State Bar, Joe was a fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Listed in "The Best Lawyers in America," he was named "Best Lawyers' 2012 Norfolk Area Litigation-Trusts & Estates Lawyer of the Year." Among Virginia Business Magazine's "Legal Elite," he was also named a "Super Lawyer" for Estate Planning & Probate by Virginia Super Lawyers Magazine. Joe served for three years as new decisions editor for the Journal of Taxation and, in addition, Martindale Hubbell rated Joe an AV attorney, its highest rating available.

Smart, funny, dynamic, generous, loyal, and caring, Joe was loved by all who knew him and will be deeply missed. Join his family for a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, August 4, at 7 p.m. in the Monarch Ballroom of the Westin Virginia Beach at Town Center. Joe had many passions, including fitness-he was co-owner of Hybrid Training Center-and animals. In lieu of flowers, we ask that any donations be made to the VB-SPCA (www.vbspca.com) on whose board he served, including as president. I would like to express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Betsy and the DiJulio family. I had the pleasure of working with Joe for a few years while employed at Williams Mullen 2006. He and I worked together very well and I had much respect for him. He was very kind, sweet and understanding. I will always treasure the opportunity to have worked with Joe. I was shocked and very sadden to come by this tragic news. My prayers and condolences go out to you Betsy and Joe's family. God bless you!Janiece Jackson-Holloway.

To the Di Julio Family,
Joeseph was my personal attorney for my will and estate. I did not know Joeseph socially, but we discussed personal issues and family when we were together. He was always professional and frank, down to earth and blunt. I will miss him very much. Very sad to hear of this...shocked, actually. I know that Joeseph's drive, energy and commitment to helping others will live on. I hope the good memories you have of Joeseph will sustain you through these difficult times.
Most sincerely,
Jeffrey Hartline

May I express my deepest sympathy and condolences to Betsy and the DiJulio family. I had the pleasure of working with Joe for several years while employed at Williams Mullen. He and I worked together like a well oiled machine, and I had the utmost respect for him. He was a friend as well as my employer and he always had a way of eliminating a stressful situation with an easy solution. I will always treasure the opportunity to have worked with and befriended such a caring, upstanding person. I was so saddened by hearing this tragic news, and words will never express how I feel about this tragic loss. My prayers are with you Betsy and Joe's wonderful family. Carolyn Meredith

My deepest condolences to the DiJulio family for your loss. As a former legal assistant of Willians Mullen, I had the pleasure getting to know him as a person and colleague. Over the years in the Virginia Beach office, I had the opportunity to work on several projects that involved Joe as a key team member throughout the process of various transactions. I have always viewed him as an extremely intelligent and competent attorney with high work ethics. He was very caring and compassionate about the good of his clients; and greatly admired and well-respected by his colleagues. He had a great personality and was easy to work with. He always had a smile.

Dear Betsy and Family-
Although I did not know Joe personally, my sister Jackie Rager worked for him and was a close friend, I work for Jackie and she spoke very highly of Joe as a friend and mentor and a always trusted his judgement in business and family matters, which I also trusted because I trust her. He called the office often and his voice just that voice "Jackie In" I will never forget. I am truly sorry for your loss. My heart hurts for you all. Melissa Voigt Bizub

As a paralegal at Williams Mullen, I had the pleasure of working with Joe for the last 25 years. His passing has been a devastating loss both professionally and personally. He was an amazing attorney, but more importantly an amazing person. His personality was so refreshing and I loved working with him. His laugh was infectious and his zest for life was contagious. He will truly be missed and the halls of Williams Mullen will forever echo his spirit.

I was so sorry to learn of Joe's passing. He was a good friend to me when we worked together at Clark & Stant (later Williams Mullen), & we had so many laughs together. On the rare occasions when one of his clients' cases went to litigation, he handed them over to me. I was so grateful for his trust in me. (Of course, we never lost a case, because he always did such a great job himself.) He was a terrific attorney & a pleasure to work with. Like everyone who knew him, I will miss him. My thoughts & prayers go out to Betsy & all of his family.

My sincerest condolences to Joe's family and to his colleagues and friends at Williams Mullen. My family and I had a very rewarding relationship with him both as a caring helper and as our trusts and estates attorney over a number of years during which time we grew quite fond of him as a person and developed great confidence an him as a lawyer. Count us among the many who will sorely miss him.

My condolences to Betsy, Terri Ann, Tina & Gabriela...as well as the entire family. Joe was a great guy, with a terrific sense of humor and amazing intelligence, and added depth to our family. I am sorry I will not be at the celebration of his life. He will be missed. RIP Joe!
