Social media has vastly increased the speed at which news (good and bad) spreads these days. Lenny was uniquely great in so many ways (as so many have already mentioned), but what have WE actually learned from his greatness -- from HIS life? If WE are not better for having known such a marvelous human being, then his life -- his goals -- were for naught. Because this life ultimately -- obviously -- ends, let us all truly honor him by "adopting" as much of his greatness as we can, making as many of his wonder-filled ways a daily part of the way WE do life. To him, I think that would be the greatest tribute. After all, if we hurt so much at such a loss, he evidently meant something VERY SPECIAL to us. May we all learn to love as Lenny loved.

R.I.P. Lenny Vaughan...you were a major catalyst in my putting academics and education in step with athletics. My experiences in literature, and english in general, were a result of your influence. I would like to think that my degree from the University of Richmond was made possible by your believe in my abilities and your stern encouragement. I became a student-athlete as a result. Thanks for making an impact in my life and being a good friend. You will be missed!

Lenny...I know you will never get to read this but I am compelled to put my writing skills to work. Teachers touch people by the very nature of their job. It takes an exceptional person to teach, to deal with young mind daily and to find patience when it is irrational to even look. You were exceptional among your peers and all that any of us can say now is thank you for being you! You changed lives and the ripples of your efforts are felt on this day. We mourn, celebrate and remember... A life well lived... Which is all any of us could hope for.... Thanks for lighting the way!

The coffee mug, the smile, the passion for literature and people, and oh the storytelling! So much of his class and his love of life have remained with me since 10th grade, when I was privileged to have Lenny Vaughan for my teacher.

The world lost an amazing teacher this week, Lenny Vaughan. Some 30 years later, I remember that 10th grade english class and all the lessons I learned. Many of them served me well academically and helped me to understand the importance of being a student-athlete. Some lessons, the most important ones, were life lessons. Any one who sat in that class walked away with a few of those. He did not allow lazy and brought humor and a bit of Lenny Vaughan sarcasm to every class. Heaven surely gained an angel this week.

Mr. Vaughan was the first teacher I ever had that made me feel like a teacher could be "cool" and strict at the same time-he taught me to hold myself to a higher standard, expect the best from myself and others. His poetry project in 10th grade in which we analyzed song lyrics certainly helped me to become the singer/songwriter that I am today. I would not be who I am without his influence. Much love to your family-Lenny Vaughan will be missed by us all.

Carol and Family of Lenny,
I taught in the English department with Lenny in 1978 at WBHS. I remember Lenny's sense of humor, the sound of his laughter, and quick wit. I have not lived in Tidewater for some 30 years, but my brother still lives in Portsmouth and keeps me updated on people I knew. Hearing of Lenny's MS and his death caused a moment of pause to reflect on a man who was intelligent and truly cared for the students he nurtured. Reading through the many tributes was pretty telling of the positive impact he had on others. We should all aspire to follow Lenny's example. My sincere condolences now and in the days ahead.

Dear Carol,
Although we all went to school together, my sister Lynn and I were really introduced to the Vaughan Family through Centenary Methodist Church. Particularly the Methodist Youth Fellowship (M.Y.F.), that we attended through graduation from high school, and was led by Mr. Tuck Dale (another wonderful man). Lenny's brother, Irvin, was of course older, so our years spent with him were less in number than our years spent with Lenny. We don't believe the word shy could be used in the same sentence with either of their names.
What a blessing to have the enthusiasm and the love of life that Lenny was given and regularly displayed.
What an upbeat, optimistic spirit he shared. In a flashback of memories we can hear his laughter and visualize his smile and animation while enjoying the humor of the moment among his friends.
Lenny was kind, gentle, and generous to all around him.
Carol, I (Lynn) remember when you and Lenny began dating. I thought that the two of you were so well matched and happy and bound for longevity.
It deeply saddens us now to think of the sorrow upon you. May God bless you as you grieve and carry on through these times. May the precious and joyous memories shared through the magnanimous numbers of days, weeks, months, and years hold you through your grief. May you and your children, family, and friends cherish and find comfort in each other as you find your way along this new, unfamiliar path. May God bless you and keep you in his care.
Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Memories of working with Lenny Vaughan at Indian River High School remind me that once upon a time, going to work was fun.
While Lenny's office may not have been the favorite site for disgruntled parents of erring students, I found it a great place to go for a movie or concert review, recommendations for good restaurants (even if expensive and out of town), or discussions of classic and contemporary literature. Conversations with Lenny were fascinating and memorable, replete with humor, irony, and sarcasm.
Most of all, I remember Lenny with gratitude for the interest and support he showed the Academic Challenge team when I was coaching. Lenny helped the team by dropping by during practices, serving as a judge or reader when needed, attending matches, and being a cheerleader for the kids at every level of competition.
In fact, in the classroom or the office, Lenny was the students' advocate -- period. He had a great heart for kids: the main qualification for educators.
Rest in peace, my friend.
Condolences and comfort to the family.

All the things Mr. Vaughan (it took me years later to ever call him Lenny) taught me made me a better person. Clearly, however, not a better writer which is my own darn fault. I have no idea if my English IQ went up but I can tell you my human IQ went off the charts. When you have former students come back to your class for a one time reading of "The Bells" with "tin-ti-nab-ulation", you know you have touched lives. Mr. Vaughan will be remembered for a myriad of wonderful expressions, funny phrases, and out and out memorable insults. He was such a great guy, he was such a great person, and I have no doubt a loving husband and wonderful father. I can only say in the end, "O Captain, my captain...."
Also if anyone wants to see some of the quotes we remember, feel free to join and share them here-

Not many teachers see their students as people (people, people, people...) and not units, much less accept and respect them as individuals. Lenny did all that and made himself genuinely available to his students, professionally and personally.
I remember some of the poetry we had to learn by heart for him, but I also remember he was a cool guy with a real life outside of school. I'm glad to have run into him at the Boathouse and other concert venues in the area to shoot the bull.
He made me a better writer and student, and I'm pretty sure his recommendation helped get me into the college of my choice. He's one of the people who made teaching look like a good career path for me, which it has been.
My deepest sympathies to his family, friends and students,

I first met Mr. Vaughan when I was 15 years old. I was enrolled in a summer school English class. Mr. Vaughan gave me a lift everyday after class to Manor High School for my Drivers Ed class since he was teaching a class there each afternoon.
I remember well cruising in his VW Rabbit listening to FM99. I also remember the tapping of his VPI ring and his zeal for Poe... Lenny was a profound mentor that inspired many.
Enjoy Cheeseburger Paradise Lenny... you earned it.

Mr. Vaughn was the type of teacher they make movies about. During a junior year full of distractions, he was an inspiration and you always looked forward to being in his class. Tough, but fair, he brought out your best (there's no chance you're acing one of his quizzes by reading the Cliffs Notes). In addition to being a great educator, he took the time to get to know you on a personal level. It was clear he wanted you to succeed in life and not just in his class.
I'll never forget Mr. Vaughn. He made a huge impact on my life and I pray these notes from so many of his students and fans offer some sort of comfort to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Heaven just got a little more interesting. I can see it now...
Ernest Hemingway: Lenny, I convinced them to hold off on calling you home until after the Hokies won the Independence Bowl!
H.L. Mencken: Finally someone with a sharp enough wit to trade barbs with me.
Mark Twain: I see the folks at Barnes and Nobles are trying to understand why there's a sudden spike in sales of Huck Finn, Gatsby, The Crucible & The Lively Art of Writing.
St. Peter: You can watch the living in the viewing room over there. You'll see you've touched a lot of lives and you'll be revered for a long time.
As if it's yesterday I'm back on G-Hall at WBHS. The bell hasn't run yet but Mr. Vaughan is already hopping around at the front of the class, ready to rib the student who slides in as the bell rings. The room crackles with electricity akin to the atmosphere at a concert just before the headliner takes the stage. When the bell sounds Mr. Vaughan holds court--a live wire brimming with vigor and a joyful zeal for literature that makes Robin William's character in Dead Poets Society seem like a slacker. No one daydreams and everyone is on his toes as Mr. Vaughan melds lecture and discussion into something truly riveting and interactive, somehow covering more material a college professor. I can still hear him tapping his ring, emphatic, "People, people, people! C'mon, I know you know this!" What he taught and the way he taught has stayed with all of us as the passing years have started to stretch into decades.
For me, Mr. Vaughan has taught yet another lesson with his passing -- a reminder to live out loud, to be genuine and engaging, and to make a difference in the lives of others.
PS - Thank you, Mr. V for making us read the Lively Art of Writing - I ended up buying my own copy and use it daily in my work.

Mr. Vaughan was the most inspiring and one of the best teachers I have ever had. He produced a love and respect for literature within his students, probably more than he ever knew. He is truly a great person and his legacy is an example of how a great teacher can inspire a student throughout life.
He always began class with "People". I will never forget that one day, we all clapped once as soon as he said it. It was the only time he was ever surprised and speechless - and we thought it was great. Of course he laughed too.
My prayers are with his family.

The last time I saw Lenny and Carol was at
Sherwin Wms, my second home. What a beautiful couple! One of those kind where one can complete the other's sentence. I was aware of Lenny's battle with MS and he handled it admirably. We talked about new music; he and Carol were looking forward to a Dirty Heads show at the Norva. As an oldster myself, my hat's off to a boomer who catches new acts when the crowd averages 25-years old. I was working out of town and didn't make that show. Lenny, may heaven have a VIP section for boomers who continue to grow musically. Continue sharing that joie de vivre beyond heaven's pearly gates.

My condolences for your loss. What a great teacher! He brought early American literature to life with his enthusiasm and made learning fun. I can still hear him talking about The Last of the Mohicans and the way he got a kick out of pronouncing one character's name. It's a rare person who can impact so many lives and ask so little in return. Mr. Vaughan was truly an unsung hero. There is a very short list of people who made a real difference in my life and Mr. Vaughan is at the very top of it. He instilled in me a lifelong passion for reading, and for that I will be eternally grateful. He was a tough teacher and he commanded respect. But he gave respect to those who earned it. In all my years as a student, I never saw a group of kids love a teacher like we did Mr. Vaughan. I have so many wonderful memories of being in his class that will be with me forever. He was my favorite teacher of all time and I am extremely thankful that our paths briefly crossed. My sincere condolences to the family. ~WBHS 95

This man changed my life. At a time when I needed the most guidance he was there. He taught me to not only appreciate literature but also how to think and how to learn.
He was much more than a teacher to me, as he was to so many others. He was witty, kind, funny, sarcastic, and always a chess move ahead of you. I think that's why we all appreciated him so much. He challenged you.
Mr. Vaughan was my hero when I was 16 and although we haven't spoken in many years, his influence on my life is abundant.

I haven't seen or talked to him in 30+ years, but I cried when I learned of Mr. Vaughan's passing. As one of his WB students, I had been on the receiving end of his wit and sarcasm yet I think we surprised each other a few times: once when he gave me the chance to "right" my "wrong" after plagiarizing, and another when I unexpectedly recited a poem in his class. Yep - I have fond memories of Mr. Vaughan, and a huge amount of respect. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

I'm one of the many students he taught over the years, and like the rest, I was inspired, engaged, and brought to laughter by Mr. Vaughan. One of the poetry "memorizations" we learned that year has always remained with me, and it seems just right now.
So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave,
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.

I will never forget the energy and fun you brought to the English Department at Western Branch High School back in 1978-80. I can still hear the rapping of your VA Tech ring on your desk whenever you wanted to make a point, your quick wit, your knowledge of classic literature and poetry, and most important, your sense of fairness. More fond memories include visits back and forth from your house to ours, even before our children were born. Then, after you and Carol bought a home, the annual Christmas parties with your trees, train, and decorations provided a time for us to catch up on what had been going on our lives during the years when we no longer worked together. You were, without exception, the liveliest, most energetic friend and colleague I've ever known.

Mr. Vaughan was the most influential teacher in my life. All of his students loved his wry sense of humor, his enthusiasm for poetry and American lit, and especially all the time he devoted to coaching Forensics.
In addition, Mr. Vaughan identified a specific skill of mine in 10th grade, and I can pinpoint the precise conversation where he told me what he thought I should do with my life. Thanks to his vision and guidance in 1990, I pursued my lifelong career.
His passing is a great loss to his family, his students and the community. May his memory be a blessing.

Please accept my condolences ...
Mr Vaughan was my 10th grade English teacher at WBHS back in the early 90's ... I would like to share some memories in hopes of lifting spirits ...
I recall a 'no whining' sign hanging In his classroom ... He would refer to it often to quiet complainers ... We have adopted the same sign where I work ... I've often mentioned my teacher when referencing this sign ...
I remember him hollering 'Let's go people' ... To get us all to settle in ...
I remember him saying 'BISS' when we would question an assignment ... To which he would explain 'because I said so' ...
I remember reading The Scarlet Letter & how he challenged anyone in the class to find a line, a word, or anything from that book that would 'stump the teacher' ... I don't remember anyone ever finding A THING he didn't know ... That was impressive!
I remember him warning us to capitalize our b's & d's when he would give us a test ... adapting to dyslexia & explaining that we might fail if we wrote in lower case (what a riot!!! & how smart to demand reasonable accommodation) ...
I could go on & on ... He was an incredible teacher ... He made me laugh A LOT & his memory/legacy will carry on ...
I am grateful to have known him ...

For many years, Lenny was my friend and confidant, my motivator and my release. We shared much on a day to day basis while we worked together, and remained friends long after. Carol, Matthew, and Adrienne, I'm happy to see you celebrate his life as you know he'd want you to. Cherish the memories. He's with you forever.

We choose to remember the smiling face and biting wit. Even just a few days ago when we saw someone talking to Lenny, one or both of them were laughing at something. That's just the way he was - how he influenced people.

Lenny, Trucker, Hokie, Bruin and many more school related fan names. School was your world and you gave it life, perfection and humor. We remember with fondness hearing you speak with passion about a subject and follow- up with a sly laugh. We enjoyed our adventures with you and, appreciate your passion for literature and the writer's souls. Peace to your family. Your legacy of Matthew and Adrienne leaves the world a better place.

Lenny will be sorely missed by many. Those of us in the school division came to rely upon him for his expertise, his insight, and for his ability to keep it real as we tried to solve the problems of the day. Lenny's quick wit and willingness to help will always be cherished. Sincere condolences to his family.

I did not know Lenny as well as others had. But, from our short encounters either at the Market or dinning in Portsmouth I could tell his character by the company he kept. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family.

One of my most favorite teachers! I still remember some of the poetry we had to memorize and loved that we could pick apart our favorite songs and call it a project. May he rest in peace. I am grateful to have known him and just hope there are English teachers that can measure up to him for this generation.

Very sorry for your loss. Seems like yesterday that Lenny would be dropping Matthew off at my house in the mornings before work for my mother to watch him everyday. Such a sweet family. Lifting you all up in prayer.

Best. English. Teacher. Ever. I can still recite Shakespeare and Wordsworth to this day, and my words will never be enough to do him justice. He was one of the great ones, and I feel privileged to have taken his class. Thank you universe for putting Mr. Vaughn in my path.

Lenny was an extremely supportive colleague who eventually became a dear friend to so many of us in the school division. He was always willing to listen and share his perspectives...and throw in a good joke in there to keep things lively. We came to trust Lenny's insight and solid advice. He will be missed.

Mr. Vaughan never gave up on me as a student, so I never gave up on him as teacher. He was a good man, whose lessons still echo through my head decades later. God bless, you are sorely missed by so many of the lives you touched.

There are people who touch your life and leave you a better person for it. Lenny Vaughan was one such person. I don't know that I would have enjoyed my time in high school nearly as much had he not been there to inspire us without trying to crush our spirits. He encouraged us to explore who we wanted to be and called us on our teenage bs with no apologies. I am so very sorry for your loss, he was such a good man.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family in this difficult time. I hope you will take pride in the impact he brought to our community. I can honestly say that Mr. Vaughan was the best teacher I ever had. Engaging high school sophomores in great literature is no easy task. He made it all so simple and relevant to our lives. He did "take it easy" and made every day a joy to be a part of his class. He will be truly missed as a beacon of what every educator should strive to be. Much love from the class of '89.
