Oma Pearl Daniels MANNS HARBOR - On Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011 Oma Pearl Daniels passed away in her home in Manns Harbor, the only home she had ever lived in during 91 years. Mrs. Daniels was born March 18, 1920. The daughter of Clarence Lee Midgett and Hattie Beasley Midgett, she graduated from Elizabeth City High School in 1936. She later graduated from Strayer-Bryant & Stratton College in Baltimore. During World War II, she was employed by the Martin Aircraft Company prior to joining the Department of War, where she worked for another Manns Harbor resident, Ina Waterfield. In 1942, she returned to her beloved hometown of Manns Harbor. On Jan. 20, 1944, she married Thomas B. Daniels. Together, the couple had a daughter, Linda Lee, who survives her mother. During the 67 years she lived in Manns Harbor after World War II, she devoted herself to raising her daughter and to public service. For more than 25 years, she served as the Assistant Post Mistress at the Manns Harbor Post Office. She was an active member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women's Association. She was also an active member of the Eastern Star. In 1976, she was initiated into the Betsy Dowd Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Daniels is survived by her daughter, Linda Daniels Harris her husband James W. Harris of Manns Harbor; and her cherished grandson, Jimmy Harris and his wife Tracy Campbell Harris of Atlanta. In addition, she is survived by nieces, Doris A. Fry, Sally A. Scarborough, Sarah Owens, Della Basnight, all of Manteo, Hester Twiddy of Florida and nephews, St. Clair Basnight and Marc Basnight of Manteo. Oma Pearl Daniels was a self-effacing lady who enriched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to come to know her. She cared deeply about each and every one of her many friends and was proudly devoted to her family. Oma Pearl was a loving person whose friendship was always there, without qualification, for any friend in need. She was extraordinary and will be missed by all who knew her. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Manns Harbor with the Rev. Bettie Francis officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Midgett family cemetery, directly behind Mrs. Daniels' residence at 6922 Highway 64. Following the interment, friends and family are invited to gather at Miss Oma's residence for refreshments and fellowship. There will be an opportunity for viewing at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo on Wednesday after 1 p.m. but the family will receive friends at the home of Linda and James Harris at 7099 Old Manns Harbor Road in Manns Harbor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made, in honor of Ms. Oma Pearl Daniels, to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 95, Manns Harbor, NC 27953.
