Robert Cutchins Obituary

Robert Allen ‘Bob' Cutchins Jr., age 98, passed away July 15, 2021. Bob was born in Hampton, Virginia the son of Sadie Hollis Cutchins and Robert Allen Cutchins Senior. At age 13 Bob moved to Cradock, Virginia where that ‘quaint little village' was a vital part of Bob's life. In later years he called himself ‘The Old Cradock Boy' and referred to his wife Ruth as, ‘The Old Cradock Girl'. Together, Ruth and Bob were ‘The Old Cradock Couple'. They wrote a number of ‘Epistles' about ‘The Good Ole Days in Cradock' referencing their experiences there in the 1930's and 40's. In 2012, Bob proudly led the parade as the Grand Marshal for the Come Home to Cradock homecoming event. He graduated from Cradock High School June 6th, 1940.

Ruth and Bob flourished together during their benevolent 63 years of marriage. Their mutual love of dance started in their teen years while living in Cradock, and continued through their senior years. Big band music was their favorite genre, and everytime it played their toes were tapping and they were out of their seats.

Bob retired as Secretary/Treasurer of Globe Iron Construction Company in 1990 after 36 years of service. He was a former member of the National Association of Credit Managers and The Old Dominion Purchasing Agents Association. Bob was a current member of the Greater Pinewell Civic League, and a charter member of The Metro Seniors Golf Association. He attended and was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 50 years. Bob proudly served in The United States Navy during World War II from 1943-1946.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife and sweetheart Ruth, his wonderful son Richard E. ‘Dick' Cutchins, sisters Ardis Creamer and Roberta Shea, brother Kermit ‘Jake' Cutchins, and very special in-laws Irene and Herbert Ortt along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob is survived by his granddaughter Kristen A. Winter and her husband Cory, grandson Allen Clay Cutchins and his wife Suzi, great grandchildren Emma Winter, Jack Cutchins and Natalie Cutchins, and nieces and nephews. Bob was grateful to the many friends and family members that helped him in his senior years. In particular, his special friend and neighbor Cody Rench spent selfless hours spanning more than a decade comforting and assisting Bob. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Wanda Marie Cutchins, who enjoyed reuniting and helping Bob through the sunset chapters of his life.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ocean View Station Museum, 111 W. Ocean View Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23503.

My Mom, Ella Grimes Beedle was the best of friends with Bob and his wife. I heard about them until she died in 2020. He knew so much about Portsmouth! Our family went to "Back home" from PA to Portsmouth our whole lives, and I often traveled with my Mom to see her sister, and Mom always visited Bob. He wa a vibrant man. Even now, I'd like to know things that I remember from Craddock, like how did the Dinky Pool get that name? My cousin and I always went to the Dinky pool as kids, we thought it was great. Such a classic name!! Mom saved all the things Bob would mail to her up here in PA that had to do with "back home". He was a wonderful. In fact, all of Mom's friends from Portsmouth/Norfolk/Craddock were "one of a kind". All the my love, Helen Beedle

My Mom, Ella Grimes Beedle was a dear friend of Bob and I was lucky enough to meet Bob many times. Mom always talked about "Ruth and Margie", her best friends from high school and I often drove down to Virginia from Pennsylvania where we lived to visit. Ruth was Bobs wife. I was so glad I could have a picture of Mom´s young life through Bob. He was a vibrant man with a memory that could bring back life in 1940´s Cradock Va instantly. He sent Mom so many things in the mail that were fascinating even to me as a young person. That era of people who lived their lives through World War II is inspirational and inspiring and I was lucky enough to have been touched by it through Mom´s friend Bob Cutchins. His obituary was absolutely beautiful!! Thank you.

It is truly a honor to be able to say I knew my great great grandad. He was an amazing "GDB" and has filed mine and many others with so many good memories. Going to visit GDB was my favorite activity with him at the door with open arms and always a smile. It is so amazing to see how he touched so many others lives with such kindness. He will live on and I will never forget that smile.

Mr. Cutchins was a class act in all his dealings with those he worked with, no matter what their position was. Also loved his sense of humor. Honored to have been able to work with him for a many years. Thoughts and prayers for the family

Prayers of Strength and Comfort for the family. Mr Cutchins was truly an awesome man... and I say that with the utmost respect. When I worked at Globe Iron as a young man back in the late 70's, Mr Cutchins treated everyone with a healthy dose of respect, no matter what your title or position was. May you Sleep In Peace, Mr. Bob!

I first met Bob when I was Archivist/Historian for the Sargeant Memorial rom. He was working on his book of Cradock section of Portsmouth. Years later he came to see me at the Wallace Memorial History Room where he gave us papers on Cradock. He was a joy to meet and had so much knowledge of our area. He will be missed.

I first met Bob at Globe Iron in 1971. I was a new employee assigned to Shipping and he was in Sales. Most people there saw me as another pip squeak ( i was 20) kid but he talked treated me like i'd already been there forever. I didn't know he'd been living in Pinewell all these years but i never forgot him and all those good memories i have of the people at Globe.

The Heavens have gained a beautiful Angel in Bob Cutchins! I can just imagine that you and Ruth are dancing among the stars to Glenn Miller! And, you no doubt are delighting in reuniting with wonderful friends and swapping stories of the "Good Ole Days" in Cradock - a place you dearly loved. You set the bar high for us who remain to cherish your memory. Your love, loyalty and friendship will never be forgotten. God Speed, dear Bob!

Sadly, I had a dose of reality in how I should follow my heart and mind, this morning, when I read of Bob´s passing. I should have called him in the past month, as I thought about him often...
My husband, Ed and I send ours saddest condolences to Bob´s family.
He was such a bright light!!
Always great full, positive and appreciative of those in his life and how his life had been. Never a regret. He and Ruth were, long time, dear friends of my parents Lem & Veronica. I enjoyed our frequent phone conversations and the times we would go out for lunch on Sunday´s...God bless his memory and I know he is happy to be with Ruth, his family and friends who went before him!!
Blessings of Peace to his family. He will not be forgotten by us or his many friends...he was a person to emulate...
