Robert Goode Obituary

Robert Lewis Goode

Virginia Beach - Robert Lewis Goode, beloved son, devoted husband and father and cherished friend passed away on February 9th, 2018 after a lengthy battle with Dementia. Robert was born in Farmville, VA in 1956, the son of the late Lewis Bouldin Goode, Jr. and Martha Wallace Goode. He was educated at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, VA, North Carolina State University and graduated from Lynchburg College. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity while attending North Carolina State.

Robert had a long and very successful career serving the road paving industry beginning in 1982 with Boxley Quarries in Bowers Hill, VA and concluding with J.T. Russell and Sons in Albermarle, NC. Throughout his career Robert built a strong and loyal customer base and was both beloved and admired by the many people with whom he worked the road building industry. Robert was also a successful restaurateur, as a founder and partner in the Whitecap and New Moon Restaurants in Virginia Beach.

He was an outstanding and gifted multi-sport athlete: at Virginia Episcopal School he was the starting quarterback on the football team, starting point guard on the basketball team and starting catcher on the baseball team. He continued his baseball career on the collegiate level at Lynchburg College. He was an outstanding tennis player in his adult life, winning countless tournaments at the country club and USTA levels. His unique left-handed slice was particularly tough on his opponents! Robert was also an avid duck hunter and outdoorsman his entire life.

Robert was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club, Galilee Episcopal Church, Society of Cincinnati in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia Asphalt Association. His gregarious, outgoing nature and love of life made hundreds of friends for Robert in both Virginia and North Carolina. He was known by several nicknames, the most recognizable being "Holiday Bob" and "Doc," fond tributes to his larger than life nature.

Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Jane Knight Goode; two daughters, Martha Bradley Goode Clark (Barry) and Sally Wallace Goode of Virginia Beach; one son, Lewis Bouldin Goode, II 4th year at University of Virginia; his mother, Martha Wallace Goode of Virginia Beach and two sisters, Ellen Goode of Lynchburg, VA and Ann Goode Hess (Mike) of Chesapeake; one nephew, David B. Hill, III (Lesli) of Dallas, TX and two nieces, Lee Wallace Watkins of Winchester, VA and Ester Nell Brandon of Chesapeake. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Bouldin Goode, Jr. and a nephew, John Henry Watkins.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 pm, Friday February 23, 2018 at Galilee Church, 3928 Pacific Ave. in Virginia Beach. A reception will follow in Tucker Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's memory to: Virginia Episcopal School, 400 VES Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503.
