Stephen Henderson Obituary


Stephen C. Henderson PORTSMOUTH - Stephen Carroll Henderson, 91, of the 100 block of Maupin Ave., went to be with the Lord Nov. 13, 2008. Born Jan. 28, 1917, in Brookneal, Va., he was the son of the late Stephen and Carrie Henderson. Stephen retired as an ordnance supervisor for the St. Julien's Creek Naval Ammunition Depot in Portsmouth after 34 years of service. He was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church in Portsmouth for 67 years, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all 16 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Arline N. Henderson; a daughter, Nancy Stokes and husband Bill; a son, Richard Henderson and wife Mindy; four grandchildren, David Stokes and wife Lorice, Glenn Stokes, Lindsay Henderson and wife Kathy and Carey Henderson; and two great-grandchildren, Mack and James Henderson. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Highland Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Kevin Wilson. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.
