Thomas Carr Obituary

Thomas B. Carr Esq. passed away on September 4, 2023, at the age of 80. Tom was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on August 10, 1943, to Tom and Louise Carr.

After graduating from St. Paul's High School in 1961, he furthered his education graduating from Georgetown University in 1965 with a B.S. in Chemistry and earning a Master's Degree in Chemistry from Brandeis University before graduating from law school at the University of Virginia.

Tom loved the practice of law. At UVA, he made Law Review and Order of the Coif. He was proud of his nearly 50-year legal careerâ€"working at several distinguished Washington D.C. law firms, including Kirkland & Ellis, Miller Cassidy Larroca & Lewin, and Baker Botts.

Tom specialized in white collar criminal defense work. He relished taking on and (he would add) winning complex legal cases. That included his work representing President Richard Nixon. Tom recalled that his law firm's billing code for that particular client was "VCO" for Very Challenging Opportunity.

Tom also loved to travel. More than that, he loved to research and plan for those family tripsâ€"often scheduling them down to the minute. "Look at the Mona Lisa for four minutes. Move on." He and his family fondly recalled those summer vacations to Europe and ski trips togetherâ€"creating truly joyful, lifelong memories.

Tom will always be loved, and he will always be missed.

Tom is survived by his daughter Courtney Carr and her children Christopher Powell and Eli Powell; his son Brendan Carr and Brendan's wife Machalagh Carr and their boys Quinn, Emmet, and Lachlan; his siblings Marylou McAlpine and William M. (Bill) Carr; his former wife Barbara Carr, and his niblings (Tom would appreciate the use of this obscure word) Lou Ann, Martin, and Lindsey; as well as numerous cousins.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 522 High Street Portsmouth, Va. 23704 at 11 AM Saturday September 16, 2023. There will be a reception following at Church of the Resurrection Parish Hall, 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, Va. 23703. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hdoliver.com

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing in 2023. He was a kind man who shared our Vienna home for a couple years. I enjoyed talking with him about our shared alma mater, UVA. He also helped us out on occasion with our doggy, Kip, when we were out of town. He would send us a photo of Kip asleep on his lap. It was so cute and it made me smile to know Kip was loved! I enjoyed hearing some stories of his illustrious past, and he spoke with great pride about his children and grandchildren.

So sorry for your loss. May he rest in peace.
