EUREKA - Bernon "Bernie" Thayer McClallen, 89, of Eureka, Ill., passed away at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Unity Point Health-Methodist in Peoria, Ill.
He was born on Jan. 7, 1925, in Peoria, Ill., a son of Bernon T. and Louise Hersemann McClallen. He married Marda J. Dorward on July 7, 1946, in Eureka, Ill. She passed away on Aug. 24, 2003.
Surviving are five sons, Steven (Marti) McClallen of Eureka, Ill., Dr. Gerald (Dr. Debbie) McClallen of Carbondale, Ill., Randall McClallen of Eureka, Ill., Michael (Neveda) McClallen and David (Molly) McClallen of Eureka, Ill.; one daughter, Janet (Bert) Otto of Naperville, Ill.; one sister, Phyllis Muller of Peoria, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Eureka area.
Bernie went through the Caterpillar Inc. apprentice program to get his engineering degree. He worked at Wabco in Peoria as an engineer. He then managed and operated Metamora Industries for 35 years, retiring in 1986. After retirement, he drove the school bus for Eureka School District 140.
Bernie was a member of the Eureka Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge 98 in Washington, Ill., and Eastern Star Chapter 115. He also was a 4-H leader and he ushered for the Bloomington Center for Performing Arts.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at the Eureka Presbyterian Church. Pastor Nollan Harwood will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka. Masonic services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka. Burial will be in Olio Township Cemetery in Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Eureka Presbyterian Church or Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka.
