Gladys Abraham Obituary

Gladys M. Abraham
PEORIA - Gladys M. Abraham, 95, of Peoria, IL, passed peacefully at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2016, in her home of fifty-six years, with her two daughters at her side.
Gladys was born on February 17, 1921, in Clinton, IA, to Edna Massad Shadid and Philip A. Shadid and was the first generation of proud Lebanese immigrants. She married Philip Abraham in 1954 and they lived a long, loving life together with their family until his death in 1997. He would have been so pleased to see her continue enjoying family, friends and her two cats for almost twenty more years.
Gladys was a trailblazer. She owned a beauty shop at the Pere Marquette Hotel in the 1950s and ran it until starting her family in 1955. She moved into the house on Bigelow in 1961 and there she protested using pesticides on food by tending to her garden organically and with care. She always cooked delicious, healthy food for her family and embraced ideas new to her, such as acupuncture and holistic medicine. Gladys loved to dance, eat and spend time with loved ones.
Her memory will be cherished by her four children, David (Valerie) Abraham of Las Vegas, NV, Connie Abraham of Peoria, IL, Gail Abraham (David Spacek) of Skokie, IL, and Dutch (Kathleen) Abraham of Peoria, IL. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Lauren (Adam) Chittick, Elle Spacek, Malyne Abraham and Traci Spacek.
Gladys was preceded in death by her siblings, Louise Shadid, Joan Pettit, Jeanette Harris and Mitchell and William Shadid.
Her brother, George (Lorraine) Shadid; sister, Pauline Unes; and brother, Fred (Jean) Shadid, survive and carry on her memory.
Gladys and her family would like to give a big thanks to all her wonderful caretakers and to Dr. Marianne Hoyle for sharing her healing and love.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 10, at 4 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church at Northmoor and Allen Road. Pastor Stephen Whitaker will officiate.
Memorials may be made to her church or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
Gladys will be remembered for her loving and generous spirit, her grit, her beautiful smile and her fabulous pies!

Aunt Gladys was such a special person!
Always kind and gracious to everyone she met. In 35 years I don't think I ever saw
her angry, mad, or sad. She always seemed happy and grateful with a smile on her face. Gladys could relate to any person she met young or old. We were blessed to have learned from her for so many years. Heaven's gain is our loss, but I do know Gladys will continue to watch and guide over us and we will have cherished memories of her and Uncle Phil!
