Joseph (Joe) Mason Alwan Sr.
PEORIA - Joseph (Joe) Mason Alwan Sr., 84, of Peoria, passed away Sunday May 3, 2020 at 10:40 AM at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on September 12, 1935 in Itoo, Lebanon, to Mason and Nabeha Alwan. He married Aminee Awada on January 11, 1966 in Peoria, she survives.
Joe was an exemplary husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by the family he cherished; son Joseph Jr of Peoria, daughter Michelle Alwan of Dunlap, son Christopher (Kim) of Peoria, and son Patrick (MaryBeth) of Peoria; seven adoring grandchildren that called him "Jidu-grandfather" Mason Alwan, Caitlin Alwan, Matthew Alwan, Joey Alwan III, John Alwan, Abraham Alwan, Luke Alwan; two brothers Jim and William Alwan of Peoria; sister Laurice Alwan of Denver, CO.; and 3 stepgrandchildren: Kate, Maggie, and Grace Scooler.
Joe was the co-founder of Alwan Brothers Meat Company in Peoria in 1955. He was a dedicated, hardworking and honest man. He was a friend to everyone he met, affectionately known by many as a generous, gregarious and loving man. Joe made everyone feel at ease with his incredible sense of humor. His family was everything to him especially his grandkids. Joe's compassion and generosity allowed him to impact so many people and he will be greatly missed.
Joe was a faithful and devoted Catholic. He was a proud member of St. Sharbel Maronite Catholic Church in Peoria and St. Philomena Catholic Church in Peoria, IL. There will be a private Funeral Mass Thursday May 7, 2020 with Chorbishop Faouzi Elia and Fr. Bechara Awada officiating. A Memorial Mass will be at a later date at St. Sharbel Maronite Catholic Church. Burial will be at St Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria.

I worked at the dinner table restaurant for his brother Willie, I didn't know Joe very well but my mother worked in the offices next to the meat market. That man showed my mother so much compassion while she was dying of cancer I remember him carrying her to the car one day when she was having a bad day. Mike and I are so sorry to hear this sad news about Joe. We were so close to the entire family and think the world will never be the same. We were neighbors of theirs back in the Ol' South Side days!!! (Insert Laughter) There was never a more wonderful family than theirs. Our families actually met back in the Zeller days.
When Mike and I were separated and I lived in Jacksonville, Fl they were my lifeline. Now we are back together basking in the light of the Lord. How time has flown by!

I offer comfort to the family by quoting Exodus 7 Verse 9. Page 712, For they who go to be with me if you be good you may too

Rise in peace knowing that they will always be remain in our hearts and minds.

We remember Uncle Harvey, Uncle Jack, Uncle Herb, Uncle Rolland, Uncle Mickey, Aunt Vicky, Aunt Lorraine, Aunt Corrine, Aunt Esther, Aunt Emily, and Aunt Lucy.
We also think of brothers Jim, Bob, Rick. Mike, Paul, Steve, Robert, Gill, Stephen, Ron and Steve along with the sisters, Barb, Gail, Sue, Kathy, Jean, Wanda and Leona.

Be strong at this difficult and please remember we are here for you. We will pray for you asking for comfort at this difficult time. Please call us if there is anything we can do, after, we are the Noels!!!
As I sat this morning looking out the window I saw a little butterfly and how fleeting life is. We sang, we laughed, we cried, we walked, we talked, we ran, we stumbled, we fell and we always got up. We were inseparable friends who had only each other. When I was in Jacksonville, FL you were my lifeline to back home. You were my only contact to keep abreast of what was happening with my dear husband Mike. Flowers blossom, trees sprout, roses bloom as did our wonderful friendship. We shared happiness, sorrow, glee, disappointment, anger, joy, love and hate. The passage of time does not erase the vacancy in my heart. Time heals but in a lifetime I will never get over losing you, our friendship and all the other things we shared. I remember talking about our old friends from Manual High School and how we would giggle and laugh. Laughter, love and memories are what held us together and keeps us going. Bless you, dear friend and soul mate. Mike and Sue Noel, Peoria, IL
