100-year-old was homemaker
EAST PEORIA - Ruby Bernice "Bernie" Hughes, 100, of East Peoria died on Friday, May 2, 2014, at Riverview Senior Living Community in East Peoria.
She was born March 23, 1914, in Peace Valley, Mo., to John Benson "Johnnie" and Iona (Bonham) Johnson. Ruby married Wilbur Emerson "Bill" Hughes on Nov. 11, 1939, in West Plains, Mo. Bill preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1978.
Ruby is survived by her sons, Larry Neal (Carolyn Sue) Hughes of East Peoria and Gary Dean (Bettina, deceased) Hughes of San Diego, Calif.; her grandchildren, John (Katya) Hughes of Northbrook, Ill., Amanda (Matthew) Nagle of Naperville and Stacey (Christopher) Siriani of San Diego, Calif.; her great-grandchildren, Samantha Hughes, Olivia Nagle, Brendan and Ashlyn Siriani; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clifford, Clyde and Othal Johnson; and three sisters, Opal Lung, Mildred Spires and Faye Warren.
She was a devout Christian, who lived her life in love and service to the Lord. Ruby attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria for many years and was active in the His Alone group at Grace.
Ruby was a homemaker, as well as an Avon representative for numerous years.
Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria, with the Rev. Douglas Lightly officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Memorials may be made to the Grace Presbyterian Church or the South Side Mission.

I feel so bad about not seeing this sooner. My father was also st Riverview. Dad just thought she was so special. Ruby was such a wonderful lady, always so upbeat and loving. My granddaughters loved visiting with her. I can still hear her saying "Oh God love ya!"
