Barbara Glasow Obituary

Barbara L. Glasow, 55, of Effort, passed away Saturday morning, May 23, in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, after a long battle with breast cancer.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of Robert and the late Muriel Glasow.

Barbara was senior class valedictorian at Cardinal Mooney High School in Rochester, N.Y., and graduated summa cum laude in physical therapy from Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y.

After college, she lived in Warwick, N.Y., where she began her private practice. A gifted pediatric physical therapist, she worked with Winslow Therapeutic Riding, and initiated a developmental approach in the use of the movement of the horse to create functional changes in individuals with disabilities.

In 1978, she began teaching seminars and, in 1982, traveled to Denmark as the PT with the U.S. NASCP Equestrian Team to compete in the Fifth International CP Games.

Called the "Grandmother of Hippotherapy" by her colleagues, Barbara was instrumental in establishing the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), furthering the use of the horse in treatment by physical, occupational and speech therapies.

She was the recipient of the NARHA James Brady Professional Achievement Award and the Barbara Glasow Award for AHA Therapist of the Year, named in her honor.

Barbara came to the Poconos in late 1986 and provided pediatric PT services for school districts, IU20 and other agencies through her private practice. She was the physical therapist and a former board member for Equi-librium Inc., Equine Assisted Services, Sciota.

She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Stroudsburg, the American Physical Therapy Association, NARHA and AHA.

She is survived by her partner of 23 years, Patricia J. Sayler of Effort; her father, Robert C. Glasow; her brother, Timothy Glasow and his wife, Mary Ann; her sister, Andrea Glasow; and her nephew, Jason Glasow and his girlfriend Stephanie Ewert, all of Rochester, N.Y.

A special thank-you to the compassionate nursing and aide staff at Pocono Medical Center.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Zion United Church of Christ, 14 N. Sixth St., Stroudsburg, with fellowship to follow after the service.

In remembrance of Barbara, memorial donations may be made to Equi-librium Inc., P.O. Box 305, Sciota, PA 18354; Zion United Church of Christ, 14 N. Eighth St., Stroudsburg, PA 18360; or AHA Inc., 136 Bush Road, Damascus, PA 18405.

Barbara Glasow was a wonderful woman. She was part of my childhood. I remember my mom driving up to Barbara's house for my brother to get therapy. Barbara Glasow will always be in my heart, and I thank her for what she had done to help my brother and my family.

I am very saddend by the loss of Barbara. She was a very special lady with very special gifts not only for our "Special" kids but for us parents as well. She always took the time to explain what was needed to be done in order to help my son Tyler acheive his goals and she had taught me how to help him as well. I am glad I had gotten to speak to her a few months back when she came to my son's rescue again! She will certainly be missed by not only myself and my son but by the many, many people who's lives she touched. God speed and Pat, you and Barbara and her family will be in our prayers.

We did not know Barbara but after reading her beautiful obit, we wanted to tell you how sorry we are for your loss. Surely Barbara was greeted by Jesus, with His arms outstretched, welcoming her home again. We hope this poem will help to ease your grief.
"The Other Side

I’m over on the other side
Where life and death softly divide…
Left my skin and bones behind
Now I’m over on the other side.

Can you feel me there with you?
My breath is gone but I’m not through.
loved you then and I still do
from over on the other side.

I can fly. Really fly.
Below the earth…all through the sky…
Tell them all I did not die.
I’m just over on the other side.

It’s good here on the other side.
The sweetest songs...the bluest skies….
Thank you for the tears you cried
But it's good here on the other side.

I can fly. Really fly.

Below the earth...all through the sky.
Tell them all I did not die.
I’m just over on the other side

The world is smaller than a needle's eye.
Where life and death softly divide…
When you leave your skin and bones behind
I’ll be waiting on the other side.

I can fly. Really fly.

Below the earth ... all through the sky.
Go tell them all I did not die.
I’m just over on the other side."

For the many skills that she demonstrated in both hypotherapy and physical therapy, teachers and students are grateful; she produced skills we never anticipated in so many.

Dear Pat and Barb's Family,

My heart is broken this morning in reading of Barb's passing. Having Lyndie, a child/young lady with multiple handicaps, has brought us in contact with a great many therapists over the past 22 years. Please know that Barb was absolutely phenomenal at what she did - she was the best of the best. Her gifts were not only in the way she grasped the intricacies of the body's physical functioning, but also in her seeing, understanding and accepting her patients for who they were, from the inside out. It was a pleasure to have known her and worked with her. I know she will be deeply missed by her loved ones and in the field of PT and Hippotherapy. Blessings and condolences to all of you.

Dear Ms. Patricia Sayler,
We don't know you or Barbara, but wish to extend our sympathy. Marty & I have been together for 23 years also, and can only imagine what you must be feeling at this time of sorrow. In the Bible there is a story about King David and his friend Jonathan. I wish to quote directly from the Bible:
"David rends his clothes at Jonathan's death and, in grieving, writes a song:
I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother;
You were very dear to me.
Your love for me was wonderful,
More wonderful than that of women."
You Are Loved!
Sincerely,
Joseph Rospetti and Martin Sillsbury ([email protected])

I read of Barbara's passing with great sadness. My thoughts and prayers are with you Pat and Barbara's family. I was in awe of Barbara when I met her in the late 1980's took one of her courses..over the years we met and remet in Narha or AHA conferences and my awe grew! Barbara "understood" disabilities from the inside out-she got it! Its not many that do. I'll never forget when the two of us struggled in line with crutches to get our breakfasts at a buffet line at the Narha conference in Chicago..instead of being intimidated by the"set-up" we joked with one another about the situation. Barbara will be missed!
