Carl L. Michaels, 87, of East Stroudsburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 26, at Pocono Medical Center. He was the husband of Florence B. (Brunner) Michaels, at home. They had been married 59 years.
Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Shawnee, he was the son of the late Burton and Alma (LeBar) Michaels. He was most recently employed by the Borough of East Stroudsburg as the superintendent of Public Works for 20 years, retiring in 1981. He had also been the co-owner of J.M. Wyckoff Feed Mill.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a captain in the China-Burma-India Theatre. At that time, he met his future wife who was serving as an Army nurse.
He was a longtime member and past president of the Acme Hose Company 1, having joined the organization in June 1941. He served as secretary of the Fireman's Relief Association for more than 40 years.
Carl was an avid sportsman: he was the oldest active member of the Wiggle Inn Hunting and Fishing Club in Pike County, where he went deer hunting just last month. He is also a member of Pocahontas Rod and Gun Club in Monroe County, and J. Africa Simpson Masonic Lodge 628.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Barbara M. Saltern and her husband, Kenneth, Carol L. Ullo and her husband, John, Margaret M. Buenzli and her husband, Steven, all of Nazareth, Mary S. Nicholson and her husband, Robert, of East Stroudsburg, and Aura M. Hill and her husband, Leonard, of Hershey; one sister, Aura M. Miller of Stroudsburg; eight grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Michaels.
The Rev. Raymond Poortstra will officiate a funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg. The Acme Hose Company will have a gathering at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 10 a.m. until time of the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carl Michaels' name may be made to Fireman's Relief Association of the Acme Hose Company 1, P.O. Box 710, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301; or Mennonite Central Committee, 21 S. 12 St., P.O. Box 500, Akron, PA 17501.
