So sorry to hear of Butch's passing. I went to Portland Elementary with Butch and always remember he was a very sweet and kind guy. We also graduated from Bangor with the class of 1968. I have been reading wonderful things about Butch--he sounds like he was a great and caring person.

Although I didn't know butch as the fire chief, we did go to grade school together in Portland, rode some motorcycle together and worked bingo where his father called numbers. I;m deeply saddened to hear butch is gone. My deepest sympathy to the family

To all those who have shared this time with the Kochanski Family, we thank you.

Though we still can't believe this has happened, I can't help but believe that Butch would be suprised at all the people who showed up to honor him and support us.
Time stops for no one.
Not even a man as good as Butch.
Days will pass and I have to believe the grief will lessen.
But all of our memories will remain.

Thank you and God Bless all of you,

Joanne and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow. I have had the pleasure in serving under Butch for the past six years as a line officer in the department and I have learned alot from him. He was always there for me wheather I just needed to talk or if I needed advice. He was the man in the department that I always looked up to and admired. I will definetly miss the times we shared together and the daily phone calls we had with each other.

R.I.P (CHIEF) YOU WILL BE MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN

Dear Joanne, Lori & Butchie:

Now that I've had a chance to collect myself and sit and ponder my thoughts & emotions, I felt compelled to once again extend my sincere condolences and support for my friend, Fire Chief and fellow public servant in his guest book.

Though words alone can not express my true feelings, I can tell each of you that many of the friends and residents that Butch touched through his stint as our Fire Chief and and 36 years in the department are also feeling much of the same pain that consumes each of your hearts as a result of your loss.

Each of you will handle this loss differently, and with this in mind, you'll need to nurture each other daily to ease the healing process that we all go through during these difficult times. As each day comes and goes, you'll all be able to slowly feel at peace knowing that Butch is resting in the safest and most comfortable place one ask for.....a place where he can witness the love and closeness of a respected family and many close friends, all who will cherish the memories of a great man, husband, father and public servant and hold them close to their hearts from this day forward.

I will personally miss Butch's guidance, dry humor and the direction he extended to those of us who had the honor of being his Assistant Chiefs through the camaraderie of the Fire Department and its membership. He had the ability to surround himself with good people and true leaders and he always put the needs of his family and close friends ahead of himself.

Butch will always be a part of our lives and he will live within each of us every day. He spoke often and looked forward to becoming a grandfather to Butch & Kim's son Chase, who is expected to be born any day now and though he left us before that milestone, he was a lucky man to be able to "practice" his "grand-dad" instincts with Lori's wonderful children who he so ever loved, cherished and enjoyed.

Butch, in his own ways has left each of us with something special to remember him by, be it something physical, spiritual or emotional, all through the path that he walked daily for us to follow as a part of the "Circle of Life" where one day, we "will" all meet again.

Again, we will all handle this loss differently, though through the strengths of each other, I can only hope that this along with the many other notes, cards and the kind thoughts that our support, and that of other friends can help make your grief a little easier to bear during this difficult time.

Many of us have already felt his presence in many of the daily things we do daily, be it in our lives or for some of us at the Fire Station. We are all ver y lucky to have known and had Butch in our lives and for that I will be forever grateful.

God Bless and Keep the Faith!

Love ya's!

My condolences to the Kochanski family in this time of hardship. Many people knew Butch in many different ways, whether family, friends, fire service, work, or of resent, stain glass window making. We all loved him and respected him on a higher level, a level that set him apart from the rest of the world.
Butch knew the ways of teaching with out lecturing. He knew how to encourage without pushing. He knew how to bring change for the good, with out the fear of the unknown. He knew how to celebrate the good actions, with out signs, parties, or hoopla. Theses are only some of the things that made him master of his craft. Theses are things that set "Butch" apart from the rest of the people in this world, but his humbleness was what let him walk with us on the journeys we all took with him.
Thank you Butch for setting the perfect example of Father, Husband, Friend, and Chief, for all that follow and try to fill your boots.

He will never be forgotten, EVER!

Butch, Thank you!

Joanne and Family: I was saddened today to see the announcement of Butch's sudden death. He was a consumat professional. Since leaving Stroudsburg, I have had full time Fire Chief and they were no better qualified or dedicated than Butch. He became the Chief during my early days there and the expectation was that the department would rotate Chief's position every few years. I was always please to see that the department had the good sense to keep Butch as the Chief. He will be missed by his department, his friends and I know most of all by you, his very beloved family. I am sorry for all of your loss.

Joanne & Family and everyone from Station 38,
Our love goes out to you all. Butch will be greatly missed. He has been a great mentor, leader and friend to us. Your dedication and leadership always inspired Chris to be proud to be a Stroudsburg Fire Fighter. It continued with B as well, he had always looked forward to the day he could join "the guys" at the firehouse. It was quite the surprise going to Lancaster for the Mud Sales and running into the two of you so far from home. We would be honored to have Joanne accompany us to the Mud Sales next year if she wishes.
Butch will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Thank you Butch for all you instilled in both Chris and B.

Words can never express our heartfelt sorrow due to the loss of Butch. He epitomized what a chief, public servant and human being should be. Many times we would pass by the firehouse and see the chief’s truck on the ramp with the light on inside the firehouse. His dedication to the community and members of the Stroudsburg Fire Department went above and beyond. His turn out gear boots (Shoes for most folks) will be tough to fill. Joanne, Kim and Butch III, we greave with you and wish you peace in knowing the legacy Butch left behind.

Lay soft your suffering back
Rest well and forever
Your memory shall not lack
Rest your tired hands
Wipe clean your weary brow
Rest here your breaking heart
We know you gave your all
Rest easy, you’ve done your part
You’ve answered your last call
Oh lord, watch over another who just fell
As we ring the final bell.

I hope the Kochanski family finds the strength to get through this tragedy, and is warmed by the love and support of a grateful community. Butch was much more than a volunteer fire chief. He was a dedicated family man, a dedicated servant to the borough of Stroudsburg, and an inspiration to those who served under him. Butch was a man of his word, and the type of guy who would help anyone, with anything. His leadership within the department never stopped after the call was over, and his guidance resonates through all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace sir and thank you for all you’ve done! Your legacy carries far beyond our little borough, county, and even the commonwealth. We can never replace you in your role within your family, or the community; but can offer your family a boat load of new brothers and sisters. Good bless, and again thank you.

FIREFIGHTER

Not many people remember us,
Not many people care,
Unless a life is saved or lost,
While we are fighting there.

We learn to respect the fire we fight,
And even love it too,
In order to end it's destructive path,
It's what we train to do.

There are many who can't comprehend,
Why we love the things they fear.

We're the first they call in their time of need, It's the reason why we're here.

The next alarm might make us proud,
And heroes of same kind,
Or maybe it will be our last,
In service to mankind.

But whatever fate may bring us,
It doesn't change our hearts.

We're Firefighters to the end.

We'll always do our part.

** He was not just a fireman, but he was also a family man. From what I know of the men in his company, he was a leader and a friend. He loved and respected all like they were family. He will be missed.
