2020 has claimed the life of another human being that took the time to invest in my life. He aided me in my journey to becoming a HUD Certified Housing Counselor, which then afforded me the opportunity to represent our agency's clients at their Mortgage Diversion Program Conciliation Hearings.
While Dan represented the plaintiff's at our hearings and I the defendants, he always treated both myself and the clients I represented with dignity and respect.
My fondest memory of Dan will be the day he and I walked into the hearing room at the Monroe County Courthouse in PA, sat down to begin mediation where Dan as the legal representation for the plaintiff would normally open arguments with his client's concerns in mind. That day was different though, on that day Daniel P. Lyons Esq. gave me one of the most empowered moments of my entire life when he afforded me the opportunity to speak first on behalf of my client, the defendant.
The Court Appointed Conciliator overseeing the proceedings asked Dan why he was doing such a thing. I will never forget the words that Dan said, I can hear him saying them to me now as I'm creating this. He said something like this... I'm affording Charlie the first opportunity to speak because he has shown time and time again he comes well prepared to represent his client, most of the time he proves the evidence I will be presenting to be outdated despite it being provided to me by our client. Charlie comes with the latest and most accurate information, he's honest, it's obvious he cares about his clients and he's cooperative when asked by my client to complete a timely task. I trust Charlie.
To say I was humbled to tears would be an understatement. After that day several other attorneys who represent the plaintiffs in cases where I represent the defendants have also afforded me the same luxury that Dan had provided me.
Now I'd be lying if I said Dan didn't take me to the mat's on a few cases because he did. But when he did he would always explain his why for doing it which aided me to be better prepared for my next appearance at a Diversion Hearing.
Thank You, Dan Lyons, for believing in me, a man with only a high school level formal education coming against attorneys with law degrees where I walk out victorious more often than not for my clients. I'll miss you, my friend.
