Eugene Garvey Obituary

Eugene A. Garvey, 75, of Matamoras, died Tuesday, May 20, at Gino Merli Veterans Hospital in Scranton. He was the widower of Grace (Keenan) Garvey who died March 2.

Born in Scranton, on Jan. 16, 1928, he was the son of John and Helen (McDonnell) Garvey.

In addition to serving as Pike County commissioner from 1996 to 1999, he was a wreck master for Erie Railroad for 28 years, and a retired logistics engineer for Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, N.J.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 471, Port Jervis, N.Y., and Mount Laurel VFW Post 8612, and Marsch-Kellogg American Legion Post 139, both in Milford.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Matamoras; and past president of Delaware Valley School Board and the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.

Surviving are two sons, Timothy Garvey of Matamoras and Gene Garvey of Apex. N.C.; one daughter, Marilyn Garvey DeVries of Jim Thorpe; one brother, Thomas Garvey of Lindenwald, N.J.; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Patrick.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday, May 24, at St. Joseph's Church, 309 Ave. F, Matamoras. The Rev. John Turi will officiate. Burial will take place in Milford Cemetery, Dingman Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 23, at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 W. Harford St., Milford.

Memorials may be made to Mental Health-Mental Retardation Center of Carbon/Monroe/Pike, 103 Independence Drive, Suite 1B, Milford, PA 18337.
