Frances Foster Stickney, 90, died peacefully on Thursday, May 18, at her home in Lamoine, Maine.
She was born July 14, 1915, in Nashville, Tenn., daughter of the Rev. Arthur I. and Hattie Magill Foster.
Frances graduated from Perry H.S. in Perry, Ga., in 1931 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Georgia in 1935. She was named to the following honor societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Mu Epsilon and Kappa Delta Pi. Frances taught high school mathematics in Georgia and Virginia as well as additional classes in history and English. She completed course work to become a certified school librarian.
During World War II, Frances trained in radar operation and maintenance at Warner Robbins Air Material Depot in Georgia teaching technical math and radar repair and writing instruction manuals. She later worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New Jersey as a technical writer and editor for the radar program.
Frances married Maine native Fernald S. Stickney in 1946 and they continued to live in New Jersey, raising a family and participating in the West Essex Camera Club and many activities involving their children.
The Stickneys built a summer home in Lamoine, Maine, and enjoyed sailing, gardening, camping and travel. Fernald and Frances moved permanently to Lamoine upon his retirement in 1965. Frances became involved in the community and continued many of her lifelong interests, including cooking, gardening, floral arranging, sewing and quilting. She was a member of the Lamoine Baptist Church, and organist for 25 years.
Following her husband's death, she served from 1979 to 1983 on the Board of Directors of Instrument Specialities, Co., Inc., of Delaware Water Gap, her husband's business.
Frances was predeceased by her husband in 1979; and by her brother, Ivan Magill Foster. She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Stickney Ackerman and her husband, Dr. Joel Ackerman of Ellsworth, Maine; two sons, Arthur Stickney of Hillsborough, N.H. and William Stickney and his wife, Lisa of Cresco; six grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; a yet unborn great-grandson; several cousins; a niece; nephew; and other extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at noon on Sunday, May 28, at the Lamoine Baptist Church, Lamoine, Maine, with the Rev. David Henry officiating.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 27, at the Jordan Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
