Jack Bates Obituary

Col. Jack H. Bates, 81, of East Stroudsburg, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, at Lehigh Valley Hospital Burn Center. His wife Mary "Betty" passed away in 2004. They were married for 51 years.

Son of Herbert and Ada Bates, Jack was born in Stroudsburg and lived off South Main Street. Jack attended Clearview Elementary School and Stroudsburg High School. His family moved to Richfield Park, N.J., and Jack graduated from Richfield Park High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, then attended Fairleigh Dickinson University and Bethany College in West Virginia. After graduation from Bethany, he studied medicine at University of West Virginia and received his Ph.D. in 1951. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he enjoyed an interesting career.

Jack was highly respected in his field and was one of the most experienced aerospace physiologists in high-altitude medicine. He received many honors for his work, including the Legion of Merit and the Wiley Post Award, and was one of a small group who worked to give our country its pre-eminent place in aerospace medicine almost 50 years ago.

After retiring from the service, Jack returned to the Poconos and made his home at White Heron Lake. He was executive director of the Pocono Mountains Chamber of Commerce from 1978 to 1987, an active Rotarian and served on many local not-for-profit boards.

Jack and Betty traveled all over the world. He loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. Jack loved his wife Betty, watching sports — especially the University of West Virginia — and visiting his many neighbors and friends. He was in all respects a true gentleman. He leaves behind his beloved cat, George.

A visitation and memorial service will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington St., East Stroudsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Marshalls Creek Fire Department, P.O. Box 1, Marshalls Creek, PA 18335, or to the PSPCA, Wild Animal Farm Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Sincere condolences regarding the passing of Jack. Very few individuals that you encounter in a lifetime possess the character and traits that Jack possessed. An unfortunate situation but he will always be remembered in my prayers .....
