Plato George Pappas, 91, of East Stroudsburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 4, 2021. He was the husband of Alice (Marin) Pappas with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.
Plato was born in Harlem, NY and raised in the Bronx where he eventually married his wife Alice in 1953 and started a family. In 1947, Plato joined the Army where he would soon become the youngest Staff Sergeant on base and a lightweight boxing champion. He shipped to Korea to join the war and was honorably discharged in 1951.
He will always be remembered for his cleverness, his sense of humor and above all his love for his family, baseball and his community, especially his friend sat "Plato's Place".
He lived in Monroe County since 1992, moving from Uniondale, NY and was very active in his community of Lake of the Pines where he was in charge of the community pool and recreation clubhouse.
Plato was predeceased by his loving son, Philip (Shirley) of Miami, FL. He is survived by his "marvelous" wife of 67 years, Alice and their three children, Denise Pappas of New York, NY, Andrew Pappas (Sabrina) of Atlanta, GA and Celeste Shea (William) of Yaphank, NY. He will be forever remembered by his eight grandchildren who loved him dearly, Michael (Emily), Jennifer, Mariana, Richard, Nicholette, Alanna, John and Christopher. He will also be remembered by his three great-grandchildren, Samuel, Zoe and Aaliya as well as many, many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Friday, July 9, at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 135 Stokes Avenue, Stroudsburg with viewing beginning at noon followed by the funeral service at 1:00PM with Father Konstantinos Koutroubas officiating. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox section of Stroudsburg Cemetery.
