Stuart Scharf Obituary

Stuart M. Scharf of Hamilton Township, Monroe County, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 8, at St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem.

"Stuie" (as he was called by his friends) was born in 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., of Jewish, Russian and German descent. In his youth, he lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. and attended local schools. In 1962, he earned a degree, with honors, in mathematics from C.C.N.Y.; however, his true love was music.

An accomplished guitarist, he toured on the road with folk singers. During the 1960s, he was an active participant in the civil rights movement and joined in many civil rights marches.

He eventually met Robert Dorough and they became producers for a 1960s folk and rock group known as "Spanky and Our Gang." Collaborating with Dorough, his best known record hit was "Like to Get to Know You (Walt's Tune"). Stuie also wrote and produced some music advertising; and "Give a Damn", also a hit, was originally an award-winning public service jingle.

When Spanky broke up, Stuie stopped producing for a living but continued to work as a guitarist in New York City, N.Y., recording studios. He was involved in thousands of sessions of all kinds and all sorts of projects for many famous artists, such as Roberta Flack.

In 1980, Stuie moved from New York to Pennsylvania and purchased a cottage in Hamilton Township. From his new home, Stuie continued to operate his own record label, publishing company, mail order catalog and religion.

He is survived by a maternal uncle, Mr. Leon Matlick of Queens Village, N.Y.; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, with memorial services at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, from the Kresge Funeral Home, Route 209, Brodheadsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Monroe County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Wild Animal Farm Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.

Stuie was a super intelligent and talented man.
It was an honor for me to have been able to work
with him in the New York studio scene. He had a strong character and no lack of conviction in what he believed in. I will continue to admire and
miss him. Always, David Spinozza
